Beloved San Pedro Matriarch Arlene Harrison Passes Away at 89
Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished mother and community figure in San Pedro, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. She leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and commitment to her family and community, having been a lifelong resident of the area.
Born into a Croatian fishing family, Arlene was deeply proud of her heritage. Her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, who immigrated from Korcula in 1907, instilled a rich cultural background that she celebrated throughout her life. Known affectionately as “Nene” to family and friends, she was a prominent environmental activist and a passionate advocate for the coastal community.
A Life of Art and Hospitality
Arlene was not only a devoted mother but also a gifted artist. As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she enjoyed oil painting, often capturing coastal scenes en plein air from her ocean view beach house. Her artistic talent extended to the kitchen, where she became renowned for her culinary skills, particularly her Croatian seafood dishes. Family gatherings were filled with love, laughter, and plenty of her famous hobotnica (octopus salad).
Arlene raised four sons—Robb, Craig, Karl, and Chris—instilling in them a love for the ocean. She taught them how to swim at Cabrillo Beach, fostering a deep connection to the water that influenced their lives and those of their children and grandchildren. Summer trips to Catalina Island became cherished family traditions, creating lasting memories.
A Legacy of Community Service
Her home on Bluff Place served as the backdrop for many family celebrations, including Fourth of July fireworks, Christmas Eve seafood feasts, and numerous birthdays. Arlene’s impact extended beyond her family; she embraced her sons’ friends as her own, creating a welcoming environment for all.
Arlene is survived by her sons and their families, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry on her spirit. She is remembered by her son Robb (Debbe) Heberer; granddaughters Heidi (Chris) Linscomb, Megan Wescott, and Molly (Matt) Dragich; and many others, including stepsons Chris Harrison and Brian (Felicity) Harrison.
In accordance with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held for immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, a place where her sons spent countless afternoons, and the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting her commitment to community and the arts.
Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison will be remembered as a loving matriarch, an artist, a host, and a steadfast supporter of her community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her, ensuring her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.
