Asus Raises Prices on Memory Products Amid Supply Chain Crisis

Asus has announced a significant price increase for select memory products, including SSDs and DRAM kits, which will take effect on January 5, 2026. This adjustment comes as the company grapples with soaring costs and persistent shortages in the memory chip market. The Taiwanese manufacturer has confirmed that the rise in prices directly reflects the substantial increases in memory chip costs experienced throughout the past year.

The decision to raise prices aligns with a broader trend in the technology sector. Dell had already implemented price hikes of up to 30 percent in mid-December, and other manufacturers are expected to follow suit. Asus’s move indicates a critical shift in the market dynamics, driven largely by escalating demand for advanced memory solutions, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware.

Market Conditions and Strategic Adjustments

Asus attributes the price increases to fundamental changes within the global supply chain. The surge in demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) has prompted manufacturers to redirect production capacities, leading to bottlenecks in traditional DRAM and NAND flash supplies. According to market research firm TrendForce, the prices for memory chips increased significantly last year, with DRAM components rising by as much as 171 percent and NAND flash by 246 percent by mid-December.

In a statement, Asus emphasized that the planned price adjustments are necessary to absorb ongoing cost pressures while ensuring the stability of supply and maintaining product quality. The company aims to support long-term planning for IT investments and continue its commitment to research and development.

Impact on Consumers and Industry Trends

The ramifications of these price increases will be felt across the entire PC market. Memory now accounts for nearly 20 percent of the total material costs for personal computers, making new purchases and upgrades increasingly expensive for consumers. TrendForce has revised its forecast for notebook shipments in 2026, anticipating a decline of between 5.4 percent and 10.1 percent compared to the previous year. As a result, consumers may choose to hold off on hardware upgrades or invest in older generation components to mitigate costs.

Many PC users are turning to previous hardware generations, specifically the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, which offers a favorable price-performance ratio in light of the current market conditions. This shift is influencing the used market, where older models like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D are sometimes priced higher than newer counterparts, such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. System integrators are also adapting by selling PCs without pre-installed RAM, allowing users to utilize existing components.

Asus plans to expand its production of motherboards compatible with DDR4 memory to provide more affordable alternatives to the pricier DDR5 standard. However, the company has denied rumors regarding its entry into RAM production, focusing instead on leveraging existing partnerships to navigate the current supply landscape.

While the adjustments may provide some relief in terms of product availability, the overall pricing trend is expected to persist until at least the second half of 2026. Consumers and industry professionals alike will need to remain vigilant as the market continues to evolve under these challenging conditions.
