LUNGevity and Rising Tide Foundation Announce $1 Million Research Grants
The LUNGevity Foundation and the Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research (RTFCCR) have launched a joint initiative to address critical challenges in lung cancer treatment, specifically focusing on drug resistance and early detection of cancer recurrence. Announced on January 15, 2026, this initiative offers up to $1 million per project over a four-year period, aimed at promoting impactful research that can directly benefit patients.
Addressing Urgent Challenges in Lung Cancer Care
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, despite significant advancements in targeted therapies and immunotherapy. Many patients face treatment resistance or experience tumor growth following initial treatment success. According to Upal Basu Roy, PhD, MPH, Executive Director of LUNGevity Research, “Currently, we don’t have ways to detect drug resistance early in the process. If we did, doctors could act early and change patients’ treatments to prevent or overcome resistance.” The urgency for research funding in this area is clear, with the goal of developing methods for early detection and treatment adaptation.
The strategic partnership between LUNGevity and RTFCCR aims to convert scientific discoveries into actionable diagnostics and treatments. The initiative is officially titled the RTFCCR/LUNGevity Award for Overcoming Treatment Resistance and Technology for Detection of Recurrence of Lung Cancer. This award seeks to support research projects that can deliver practical benefits for lung cancer patients.
Focus on Patient-Centered Research
The collaborative effort builds on previous partnerships that have aimed to enhance early detection of lung cancer. Dr. Karolina Werynska, Scientific Program Manager at RTFCCR, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “This year’s joint research award has the potential to dramatically change the landscape of lung cancer survivorship and we’re eager to see the exciting ideas the researchers propose.” Successful applications will need to demonstrate a patient-centered approach, including the involvement of patient advocates or organizations from the project’s outset.
Projects must address one of three specific areas: developing treatments for resistance, validating laboratory tests for monitoring resistance and treatment response, or testing for minimal residual disease detection. The deadline for applications is set for February 15, 2026, and interested researchers can find additional information on the application portal.
About the Partner Organizations
The Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research, established in 2010 and based in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, prioritizes funding innovative, patient-centered clinical research. Its mission is to quickly provide maximum benefit to cancer patients through partnerships and support for clinical trials ranging from Phase I to Phase III. The foundation aims to create less toxic therapies and improve the quality of life and survival rates for patients.
LUNGevity Foundation, the leading lung cancer organization in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the experience of being diagnosed with lung cancer. Its approach combines research, advocacy, and community support, aiming to enhance survivorship and health equity. The foundation provides various resources, including a patient-centric website and support services, to help those affected by lung cancer navigate their healthcare journey.
As lung cancer continues to pose significant challenges, initiatives like this collaboration between LUNGevity and RTFCCR are crucial in developing new strategies to combat the disease and improve outcomes for patients.
