F-16 Jets Intercept Civilian Aircraft Over Mar-a-Lago No-Fly Zone
On the morning of December 21, 2025, NORAD deployed F-16 fighter jets to intercept a civilian aircraft that had entered restricted airspace over Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. and highlighted the heightened security measures in place, particularly given the proximity to the Mar-a-Lago estate, where former President Donald Trump was staying during the holiday season.
The interception unfolded as pilots performed a “headbutt” maneuver to alert the pilot of the civilian plane. This action underscores the strict enforcement of flight regulations in the area. According to CBS12, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established a year-round Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that restricts air access within a one nautical mile radius of Mar-a-Lago. Gregg Weiss, a Palm Beach County Commissioner, emphasized the importance of these regulations in maintaining security around high-profile individuals.
In conjunction with the permanent TFR, additional restrictions apply when Trump is present at his estate. From the evening of December 21 until January 4, 2026, the TFR expands to encompass a 30 nautical mile radius. This extensive protective measure reflects ongoing vigilance and security considerations, especially during the busy holiday season.
The mandate from NORAD is clear: general aviation pilots must check FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) before each flight. Compliance with these procedures is crucial, as the civilian aircraft was safely guided out of restricted airspace following the interception. Both WPBF and NORAD’s social media channels reaffirmed the necessity for pilots to remain alert regarding airspace restrictions.
“Pilots, @NORADCommand fighters intercepted an aircraft violating restricted airspace over Palm Beach, FL. Check NOTAMs before EVERY flight!”
The incident serves as a reminder of the strict protocols that govern air travel in sensitive areas, especially those frequented by prominent figures. With heightened security measures in place, the vigilance of military and aviation authorities remains paramount to ensure safety in the skies above one of America’s most closely monitored winter retreats.
