Collingdale Police Chief Shanee Mitchell Faces Leave Over Schedule Dispute
Shanee Mitchell, the first female African American police chief of Collingdale, is currently on paid administrative leave due to a dispute concerning her work hours. The decision has sparked controversy and raised questions about the motivations behind her suspension.
Mitchell was placed on leave following allegations that she failed to comply with her designated work schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. In response, her attorney, Mark Schwartz, has asserted that her contract includes provisions for flexible working hours. He contends that the decision to place her on leave reflects political motivations, particularly given that it coincides with the recent election of a new board in Collingdale.
As part of the administrative leave, Mitchell was directed to vacate her office at the Collingdale Police Department and surrender her badge and firearm. This situation follows similar complaints regarding her work schedule during her previous tenure as chief of the Selinsgrove Police Department.
Community reactions have varied, with some residents expressing concerns about the impact of Mitchell’s absence on local safety. Chris Katalinas, a resident from nearby Darby, emphasized the need for effective leadership in the area. Similarly, Theo Tsahourides raised questions about the lack of communication regarding Mitchell’s situation.
In light of these developments, Schwartz has indicated plans to file a lawsuit against the borough, challenging the timing of the leave and suggesting it is unjustly punitive. This situation is particularly striking given that Mitchell was recently honored with the town’s first Citizen Award, recognizing her contributions to the community.
As the situation unfolds, the community and observers await further developments regarding the potential legal action and its implications for Mitchell’s career. The outcome may have significant repercussions not only for her but also for the leadership dynamics within the Collingdale Police Department.
