Amanda Edwards Halts Congressional Campaign for Texas 18th District
Former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards announced on March 13, 2023, that she is suspending her campaign for Texas’ 18th Congressional District. In a statement shared via social media, Edwards confirmed that while her name will remain on the Democratic primary ballot scheduled for March 3, 2026, she has chosen to discontinue her bid for Congress.
In her post, Edwards emphasized her ongoing commitment to the community, stating, “I have decided to suspend my campaign for Congress. My commitment to serving and advocating for the community remains unchanged. I cannot thank you enough for working with me to elevate people over politics and to deliver results for our community.”
This decision follows her recent defeat in a special election runoff against Christian Menefee, the former Harris County Attorney, who won with more than two-thirds of the vote. Edwards had initially intended to continue her campaign in the upcoming Democratic primary despite this setback.
Menefee, who was sworn into office after his special election victory, expressed admiration for Edwards in a statement on social media. He remarked, “It’s an honor to have run alongside Amanda Edwards in this campaign. She’s always been a voice for the community, committed to service, and the consummate professional.”
The political landscape for the upcoming Democratic primary has shifted following Edwards’ announcement. Menefee is now set to face Congressman Al Green, who recently entered the race in light of last year’s mid-decade redistricting. This development adds a new dynamic to the contest for the Texas 18th District seat.
As the primary approaches, the political strategies of the candidates are expected to evolve. With the Democratic primary just weeks away, the focus will shift toward how Menefee and Green position themselves in the race. The outcome of this primary could significantly impact the future of representation in Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
Edwards’ decision marks a notable moment in Texas politics, as she steps back from a campaign that many believed would be competitive. Her dedication to community service remains a focal point of her message, as she continues to advocate for issues important to her constituents, even from outside the congressional race.
