Great Plains Food Bank Secures $75,000 Freezer Donation for Food Hub
The Great Plains Food Bank has received a significant donation in the form of a walk-in freezer valued at approximately $75,000. This freezer, previously utilized at the factory of Fairchild Equipment, will be repurposed to support a regional grocery and local food hub initiative spearheaded by the North Dakota Rural Electric Cooperatives Foundation.
Located in Fargo, the Great Plains Food Bank plays a pivotal role in addressing food insecurity in the region. The newly acquired freezer will be a vital asset for the food hub, which aims to assist small-town grocery stores in maintaining operations. The initiative is particularly crucial as many rural areas face challenges related to food access and availability.
Darby Njos, the Communication and Marketing Manager at Great Plains Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the partnership between Fairchild Equipment and the food bank. “We’re really just grateful for Fairchild Equipment’s commitment to giving back to their community and that we were able to be that connecting piece to keep this local,” Njos stated.
This collaboration is expected to have a lasting impact on the community. By donating the freezer, Fairchild Equipment contributes to efforts aimed at reducing food deserts across North Dakota. Njos emphasized the broader benefits of the initiative, stating, “By giving this to the association, they are able to continue to work to lessen food deserts across our state, which will ultimately benefit us all.”
The freezer will become operational once the regional food hub facility is fully established. This initiative not only highlights the importance of local partnerships but also showcases the community’s commitment to ensuring food accessibility for all residents.
As food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue, the Great Plains Food Bank remains dedicated to fostering relationships that enhance food distribution networks. The donation from Fairchild Equipment exemplifies how local businesses can play a critical role in supporting community welfare and addressing food supply challenges.
