Syringa Hospital Board Explores Strategies to Boost Community Health
At a meeting on December 17, 2023, the board of trustees for Syringa Hospital convened in Grangeville to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing community health services and improving the hospital’s reputation. Key topics included promoting the clinic’s services, increasing awareness of wellness exams, and addressing community trust in healthcare providers.
During the meeting, Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator Hannah Seitz presented initiatives designed to elevate the visibility of the hospital’s providers. She emphasized the importance of marketing the clinic’s extended hours for the walk-in service, stating, “That’s something we want to get out there and let people know.” Seitz also proposed a strategy to highlight each provider’s unique skills and interests to foster community engagement.
Trustee Jim Paradiso raised the possibility of focusing on geriatric care, questioning whether any providers specialize in this area due to the local population’s needs. Interim CEO Bruce Shepard acknowledged the absence of a dedicated geriatric provider but assured that the clinic remains committed to prioritizing Medicare wellness exams. These exams serve as preventive health assessments, also known as Annual Wellness Visits (AWV), which are essential for developing personalized health plans for patients.
Paradiso expressed the necessity of better educating the community about these exams. “Plenty of my friends and I feel this is unnecessary,” he remarked, highlighting the need for clearer messaging on the importance of such preventive services.
Trustee Terri Tackett voiced concerns over the community’s understanding of weight loss medications, advocating for enhanced education regarding their side effects and alternatives. She noted that people often seek answers on social media rather than consulting healthcare professionals. Seitz highlighted that Nathan Winder, a provider at the clinic, is particularly knowledgeable about weight management strategies. She noted, “He is the stop before surgical options.”
Chief Operating Officer Michelle Schaeffer reinforced the clinic’s commitment to patient care, indicating that all providers have access to the same resources. She emphasized that Winder’s approach to weight management extends beyond traditional methods, considering how medications might impact patients’ weight loss journeys. “Dr. Smith and PA-C Winder work very well together,” Schaeffer added, underscoring their collaborative approach to patient success.
The discussions reflect the hospital’s ongoing efforts to connect with the community and address the evolving healthcare needs of its residents. The board’s focus on enhancing visibility, educating the public, and fostering trust highlights the commitment to improving health outcomes in the region.
In the coming months, the board plans to implement these strategies, aiming to not only increase service awareness but also to build a stronger rapport with the community it serves. The initiatives discussed could significantly impact the hospital’s reputation and its ability to provide comprehensive care tailored to the needs of the local population.
