Data from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District reveals that approximately 10% of all patients seeking emergency care during this period were diagnosed with influenza, marking the highest rate observed in recent years. Miguel Cervantes, assistant director of the Communicable Disease Division, noted, “The previous high or peak in other flu seasons was around eight percent.”

Nationally, the impact of the flu has also been severe, with eight children reported to have died from complications related to the virus in the week concluding on January 3. Since the onset of the flu season, the death toll among children has reached 17.

The dominant strain currently circulating, H3N2, is associated with more severe symptoms. Cervantes pointed out, “So timing does matter.
