Emergency Room Visits for Flu Surge in Bexar County
Emergency room visits for the flu have significantly surged in Bexar County, Texas, with reports indicating a fivefold increase at the end of December compared to the beginning of the month. Data from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District reveals that approximately 10% of all patients seeking emergency care during this period were diagnosed with influenza, marking the highest rate observed in recent years. Miguel Cervantes, assistant director of the Communicable Disease Division, noted, “The previous high or peak in other flu seasons was around eight percent.”
### Statewide and National Trends in Flu Activity
While Bexar County experiences heightened flu activity, statewide trends show a fluctuation in emergency room visits. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported a significant decline in flu-related ER visits during the week ending on January 3, 2024, with 10,000 fewer individuals seeking care compared to the previous week. Despite this drop, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has categorized flu-like illness activity in Texas as “very high.”
Nationally, the impact of the flu has also been severe, with eight children reported to have died from complications related to the virus in the week concluding on January 3. Since the onset of the flu season, the death toll among children has reached 17.
### Understanding the Flu and Its Complications
The current public health landscape is complicated by various respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and adenovirus. In South Texas, the cedar fever season is also contributing to the increased incidence of respiratory symptoms. Cervantes emphasized the importance of testing for accurate diagnosis, as treatments vary significantly depending on the illness. “A lot of people think that, ‘Oh! I’m sick! I’m gonna get an antibiotic!'” he stated. “Well, guess what? That’s not gonna be effective against the flu because the flu is a virus.”
Antiviral medications are available for both flu and COVID-19, but their efficacy is highest when administered early in the course of the illness. The dominant strain currently circulating, H3N2, is associated with more severe symptoms. Cervantes pointed out, “So timing does matter. If you’re someone who generally has a weakened immune system or someone who has other health conditions, you should take the symptoms seriously, even if they are less severe at the early stages.”
### Preventive Measures and Vaccination Availability
To mitigate flu transmission, health officials recommend basic precautions such as regular handwashing and staying home when ill. Cervantes advised, “Don’t go to work. Don’t go to school. Don’t send your kids to school.” These measures are crucial in preventing the spread of the virus.
Despite being mid-flu season, vaccination remains a viable protective option. Healthcare providers and pharmacists continue to administer flu vaccines, which can help reduce the risk of infection, particularly for those who have not yet contracted the virus. Those interested in vaccination can reach out to local health clinics for guidance on eligibility and availability.
As the flu season progresses, health officials urge vigilance and proactive health measures to safeguard communities against this infectious disease.
