Texas Country Music Icon Joe Ely Dies at 78 After Health Struggles
Joe Ely, the renowned Texas country music songwriter and performer, has passed away at the age of 78. His death occurred at his home in Taos, New Mexico, due to complications related to Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pneumonia. Ely was surrounded by his wife, Sharon Ely, and daughter, Marie Ely, at the time of his passing.
Born on February 9, 1947, in Amarillo, Texas, Ely grew up in Lubbock, where he emerged as a pivotal figure in the vibrant West Texas music scene. He later moved to Austin, a city that would become synonymous with live music and artistic expression. His contributions significantly shaped the region’s reputation as a cultural hub.

Ely’s career spanned over five decades, during which he became known for his passionate performances and compelling songwriting. In a statement, Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, noted, “Joe Ely performed American roots music with the fervor of a true believer who knew music could transport souls.”

His distinctive musical style blended elements of honky-tonk, rock & roll, roadhouse blues, western swing, and conjunto, creating a sound uniquely his own. Ely first gained recognition as a member of the Flatlanders, alongside fellow Lubbock natives Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock.
