Raven-Symoné Shares Name Preferences on Podcast with Tish Cyrus
Raven-Symoné recently opened up about her name preferences during an episode of her podcast, “Tea Time w/ Raven & Miranda,” which she co-hosts with her wife, Miranda Maday. The 39-year-old actor expressed discomfort when fans shorten her name, revealing that this practice can be triggering for her.
While discussing her full name, Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman-Maday, with guest Tish Cyrus, Maday prompted her to share her feelings about the name. With a mix of humor and seriousness, Raven-Symoné stated, “I’m going to be honest. Sometimes I have a problem when people call me Raven. (That) tends to, like, trigger me a little bit from my time being called Raven.”
Raven-Symoné gained fame for her role as Raven Baxter on the popular Disney Channel sitcom “That’s So Raven,” which aired from 2003 to 2007. She later reprised the character for the spinoff series “Raven’s Home,” running from 2017 to 2023.
In her conversation, she described how friends and family sometimes opt for a more casual approach by using her middle name, calling her Chris. “If we’re in a big, open area and there’s a lot of people, I’ll be like, ‘Do not call me Raven in public. Call me Chris,’” she shared. This preference highlights her desire for a more personal connection, away from the public’s perception of her.
Reflecting on her name’s impact, Raven-Symoné mentioned that the frequent use of her first name has led her to disassociate from it. She explained that while she was known as Raven-Symoné during her career, her family had different nicknames for her. “My parents called me Ray and my brother called me Reva,” she noted.
In 2023, Raven-Symoné addressed the confusion surrounding the pronunciation of her name in a TikTok video, clarifying that it is pronounced “See-mon-ye.” She emphasized the correct pronunciation with text on the video, stating, “Those who know…KNOW…” In a follow-up video, she discussed why she did not introduce her name correctly during her early Disney Channel appearances. “I was told to tell everyone that my name was Raven-Symoné and it just never left my body,” she explained.
Despite the ongoing mispronunciation, Raven-Symoné expressed that she is not overly concerned about how the public says her name. “Coming here to where I’m living, Raven-Symoné is just fine,” she reassured her fans. She added, “I don’t trip over it. I don’t correct people. But the correct spelling of my name is pronounced ‘Raven-Symoné,’ but you can call me Raven-Symoné.”
Raven-Symoné’s candid reflections on her name resonate with many who navigate public personas versus personal identities. Through her podcast, she continues to engage with fans while sharing her experiences and preferences, shedding light on the complexities of celebrity life and identity.
