Prime Video Greenlights ‘Lore Olympus’ Animated Series Adaptation
Prime Video has officially announced the adaptation of the popular webcomic Lore Olympus into an adult animated series. Based on the critically acclaimed work by Rachel Smythe, the series is set to premiere exclusively in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first adult animated series produced by The Jim Henson Company.
Originally launched on WEBTOON in 2018, Lore Olympus quickly became a global phenomenon, accumulating more than 1.8 billion views, making it one of the most-read webcomics globally. The narrative offers a contemporary retelling of the myth of Persephone, infusing ancient Greek mythology with themes of modern power dynamics, trauma, identity, and forbidden love. The comic has garnered multiple prestigious awards, including the Eisner Award, Harvey Award, and Ringo Award for Best Webcomic or Digital Book in the same year, alongside its graphic novel adaptations achieving New York Times bestseller status.
Julia Cooperman will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the adaptation. She expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and WEBTOON on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular webcomic, Lore Olympus.” Cooperman emphasized the timelessness of the stories that resonate through contemporary narratives, adding that the team is eager to share this “frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining” with both new audiences and long-time fans.
David Madden, President of WEBTOON Productions, acknowledged the passionate fanbase behind Lore Olympus, pointing out the series’ stunning artwork and rich storytelling. He noted that Smythe’s work has cultivated a global community eager for more content. Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, described the project as “deeply inspiring,” highlighting the relevance of Smythe’s interpretation of mythology in today’s context. Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation at Prime Video, echoed this sentiment, calling the collaboration an exciting addition to the platform’s expanding animation portfolio.
The upcoming series will join a notable lineup of adult animated offerings on Prime Video, which includes adaptations of Critical Role titles such as The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, among others. While a release date for the Lore Olympus animated series has not yet been announced, the anticipation surrounding its development continues to grow.
