Philadelphia’s Michael Barkann to Share Sports Insights at Rodeph Shalom
Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia will host a special event featuring renowned sportscaster Michael Barkann on November 11. The gathering aims to provide community members with an insider’s perspective on Philadelphia sports, highlighting Barkann’s extensive experience in the field.
Barkann, a distinguished member of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, is widely recognized as a prominent figure in the local sports media landscape. His accolades include hosting postgame shows for the Eagles and Phillies, as well as reporting for significant events such as the Winter Olympics and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. Over his career, he has earned multiple honors, including being named Philadelphia Sportscaster of the Year seven times and winning five Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards.
Dan Stamm, co-chair of the synagogue’s men’s group, the Men of RS, expressed enthusiasm about Barkann’s upcoming visit. “He’s been the voice of the fan for a long time, primarily for the Eagles and Phillies. He has a wealth of stories to share, making this a unique opportunity for the community to engage with him,” Stamm noted. His connection with Barkann has grown over the past year while they worked together at NBC10 Philadelphia.
Stamm emphasized that Barkann’s participation aligns with his desire to deepen his involvement in the local Jewish community. “This event allows him to connect with Jewish individuals, share his experiences, and foster relationships within the community,” he said.
Organizers anticipate that Barkann will discuss the challenges and triumphs of covering Philadelphia sports over the last three decades. Brad Hyman, the congregation’s cantor, hopes Barkann will draw parallels between his experiences and Jewish values. “Michael’s character and principles reflect the essence of a menschlichkeit—a spirit of kindness and decency that resonates within the larger community,” Hyman remarked.
The Men of RS group aims to make Barkann’s appearance a precursor to hosting more high-profile events in the future. Hyman highlighted the significance of using sports as a means to unite the community. “Our history and size enable us to attract notable personalities for major programs. Events like this allow us to celebrate our community less formally, using sports as a powerful connector,” he stated.
As the event approaches, excitement is building among congregation members. Stamm noted, “People are eager to bring their families, with many saying they want their kids to experience this opportunity. It’s a moment they will likely remember fondly.”
The event is open to the entire Philadelphia community and free of charge, although organizers require pre-registration to manage attendance and security. With several hundred slots available, they do not foresee any issues with capacity.
For more information or to register, interested individuals can contact the synagogue directly.
