Netflix Welcomes Back ‘Stargate SG-1’ After Three-Year Absence
The acclaimed sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 is set to return to Netflix on February 15, 2026, after a three-year hiatus. This revival comes following a new licensing agreement between Netflix and MGM, now part of Amazon. Subscribers in the United States and select international regions will once again have access to all ten seasons of the show, a significant addition to Netflix’s content lineup for the New Year.
Originally launched in 1997, Stargate SG-1 has been a cornerstone of the science fiction genre, alongside classics like Star Trek and Doctor Who. The series continues the story from the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich, following Colonel Jack O’Neill, portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson, and his team, including Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), Major Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), and the Jaffa warrior Teal’c (Christopher Judge), as they explore the galaxy through an ancient alien portal.
Previous Availability and Future Prospects
The series was previously available on Netflix in the United States until it was removed on December 1, 2022, after the licensing deal expired. At that time, many speculated that the show might not return to the platform due to Amazon consolidating its content for Prime Video following its acquisition of MGM. This new agreement marks a notable turnaround, allowing fans to binge-watch the series once more.
Currently, the licensing deal includes only Stargate SG-1. The spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, remain available exclusively on Prime Video and Pluto TV in certain regions. However, should the original series perform well upon its return, there is potential for Atlantis to also be added to Netflix later in 2026.
Additional Content Coming to Netflix
This revival of Stargate SG-1 aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy to enhance its library with content from MGM Television. An Amazon representative confirmed that several other titles are expected to debut on Netflix, including the acclaimed series Hunters, starring Al Pacino, and Fargo, which became available in select international territories in December. Other anticipated additions include The Man in the High Castle and a variety of films, such as the James Bond collection and Legally Blonde.
Interestingly, there were discussions in the past regarding a potential reboot of the Stargate franchise for Netflix, but those plans were halted after Amazon’s acquisition. Instead, a new reboot is currently in development at Prime Video, led by Martin Gero, which was announced last month.
Fans of the franchise are eagerly anticipating the return of Stargate SG-1. The series not only has a dedicated following but also holds a significant place in television history. As subscribers prepare for its re-launch, the excitement surrounding this sci-fi classic is palpable.
