Netflix Secures Rights to Brian Michael Bendis’ Graphic Novel “Torso”
Netflix has secured the rights to adapt the graphic novel Torso, a true crime story by acclaimed writer Brian Michael Bendis. Following a competitive bidding war, the streaming giant finalized a seven-figure deal to bring this narrative to life. While no writer or director is currently attached to the project, Zach Cregger, known for his success with horror films like Weapons, will serve as producer.
A Unique Story of Crime and Investigation
Originally published in 1998 by Image Comics, Torso explores the later career of Elliot Ness, the famous lawman known for his role in bringing down Al Capone. The graphic novel focuses on his time in Cleveland, where he investigated a series of grisly murders that left victims’ torsos in the river, taunting local police with cryptic notes. Bendis collaborated with writer Marc Andreyko on the project, with Bendis also providing the artwork. The inspiration for the graphic novel stemmed from Bendis’ access to case files related to the Cleveland Torso Murders, which included photographs, newspaper clippings, and interviews, some of which featured insights from Ness himself.
The adaptation has seen various names associated with it since 2013, including notable directors like David Lowery, Paul Greengrass, and David Fincher as potential candidates. Additionally, there were discussions of actors such as Matt Damon possibly joining the cast. Speculation around the project included different scripts penned by writers like Ehren Kruger and Brian Helgeland.
Excitement Surrounds New Adaptation
Zach Cregger’s involvement adds a fresh layer of anticipation to the adaptation, given his successful track record with horror films like Barbarian and Weapons, as well as his upcoming project in the Resident Evil franchise. His unique perspective and experience in creating engaging narratives in the horror genre make him an intriguing choice for producing Torso.
Fans of the graphic novel are eager to see how Netflix will execute this adaptation, which promises to delve into a complex and chilling chapter of American crime history. As excitement builds, the project is set to be one to watch in the coming years.
For those interested in sharing thoughts about the adaptation, engaging discussions abound in various forums, including ComicBook, where fans can express their anticipation and predictions for the film’s development.
