Luminiscence Revenue Funds Renovation of Basilica of St. Mary
The Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis is set to benefit from a series of immersive light shows known as Luminiscence, with proceeds directed towards the church’s renovation efforts. This innovative event, held from now until February 1, 2024, features stunning light and sound displays that transform the Basilica’s iconic nave, attracting both locals and visitors.
The Basilica, renowned for its striking stained-glass windows and grand granite exterior, has long been a centerpiece of the Twin Cities. Inside, the absence of columns in the nave ensures that every seat offers a direct view of the performances, making it an ideal venue for community events. The church has hosted various gatherings, including the popular Basilica Block Party, which celebrates music and arts, although the festival was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic.
Luminiscence is produced by the French company Lotchi and marks its first foray outside Europe. The show features kaleidoscopic projections across the nave and ceiling, complemented by live musical performances from choirs and orchestras. According to Clayton Ferguson, general manager of Luminiscence, the idea to bring this experience to Minneapolis came after he reached out to the Basilica’s pastor, Daniel Griffith. Ferguson emphasized the Basilica’s historical significance, noting it was once the largest nave in the world.
“The Basilica is honored to host this extraordinary experience for our community,” Griffith stated. “Luminiscence beautifully weaves together the unique history, faith, and artistic heritage of the Basilica, offering a visual and musical expression of what we cherish most about this sacred, iconic church.”
The partnership between Luminiscence and the Basilica includes a financial agreement where a portion of the proceeds will support restoration projects. Mae Desaire, the Basilica’s communications director, confirmed this arrangement, highlighting the dual benefits of the show: financial support for renovations and an opportunity to grow the congregation.
Creating the Luminiscence show is a significant financial undertaking. Ferguson did not disclose exact costs but estimated they run into the millions. The production utilizes 20 high-end light projectors, each valued at approximately $50,000, leading to a total hardware investment of around $1 million. These costs are categorized into capital and operational expenses, with plans for the projectors to be used over several years.
As the show progresses, interest remains high, with an impressive average of 93% of performances selling out. There are still over a dozen shows scheduled, but ticket availability is diminishing rapidly. The Basilica of St. Mary continues to be a vibrant hub for arts and community, with Luminiscence poised to leave a lasting impact both artistically and financially.
