Loveland’s Gary Schmidt Celebrates 20 Years of Musical Tradition
A Loveland musician, Gary Schmidt, is set to celebrate two decades of musical performances with a concert at the Rialto Theater Center on January 30, 2024. This annual event has become a cherished tradition in the community and showcases Schmidt’s evolution as an artist over the past twenty years.
Schmidt, known for his captivating piano performances, has built a global following largely through streaming platforms such as Spotify and Pandora. He recently marked a significant milestone, achieving over 1 million streams on Pandora. “I can look up my numbers on Spotify and see where people are listening,” he said. “At any moment, 24 hours a day, someone is listening to my music.” This accessibility has made his work resonate with audiences worldwide, enhancing his reputation as a contemporary composer.
The upcoming concert will feature an array of music, including George Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue,” alongside selections from composers such as Couperin, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as some of Schmidt’s original works. “’Rhapsody in Blue’ is certainly one of the most iconic and popular pieces of American music,” he remarked, highlighting its blend of jazz and classical elements.
Schmidt’s journey into music began at the age of six in Canada, where he was inspired by a record of piano music. With no formal lessons available, he taught himself and later gained admission to the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His motto, “Enhancing life through music,” reflects his approach to creating meditative and contemplative pieces that are popular for relaxation and yoga settings.
Over the years, Schmidt’s concerts have transformed from showcasing classical pieces to incorporating his original compositions. Initially hesitant to compare his work with that of great composers like Beethoven, he has since embraced his own musical voice. The Rialto Theater, with its great acoustics, has played a significant role in his performances. Schmidt fondly recalls the early days when he had to bring his own piano to the venue before the theater expanded its facilities.
Living in Loveland for approximately thirty years, Schmidt appreciates the community’s support for the arts. He expressed, “I just love it here,” noting the city’s beauty and its vibrant artistic scene. In addition to performing, he also teaches piano lessons, sharing his passion for music with others.
For those interested in attending, Schmidt’s concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Rialto Theater Center, located at 228 E. Fourth St.. Tickets are priced at $25 and can be purchased by calling 970-970-2120 or visiting his website at garyschmidtmusic.com.
As Schmidt prepares for this milestone concert, he reflects on the journey that brought him to Loveland and the connections he has forged through music. “Last year my music was streamed in over 170 countries. It’s very humbling,” he said, underscoring the global reach of his artistry.
