London Symphony Orchestra Welcomes John Harte as New Managing Director
The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has officially appointed John Harte as its new Managing Director, set to take office in August 2026. Harte, who has served as Chief Executive of the Aurora Orchestra since 2009, expressed his excitement about joining the esteemed orchestra, noting its “artistic vibrancy” and “extraordinary social impact.”
In his statement, Harte emphasized the privilege of stepping into the role during a time of significant strength for the LSO. He stated, “I am thrilled to be joining the LSO, a company whose artistic vibrancy, rich history, and extraordinary social impact I’ve long admired. It’s a privilege to be appointed to the MD role at a moment of such artistic and organisational strength, and I look forward to working closely with players, staff, board and collaborators to take the Orchestra to still greater heights in the coming years.”
This leadership change follows the tenure of Dame Kathryn McDowell, who has been instrumental in the orchestra’s development. Sarah Quinn, chair of the LSO, highlighted Harte’s accomplishments at Aurora Orchestra, noting its rapid rise as a significant force in UK music. Quinn stated, “John has led outstanding work at Aurora Orchestra, which has become a significant force in UK music in an impressively short period of time. We very much look forward to working together.”
Harte’s experience at Aurora Orchestra, where he played a key role in expanding its impact and reach, positions him well to lead the LSO. He is expected to collaborate closely with the orchestra’s chief conductor, Sir Antonio Pappano, and conductor emeritus, Sir Simon Rattle, as they work towards enhancing the orchestra’s artistic initiatives and community engagement.
The appointment of Harte comes at a pivotal moment for the LSO, which continues to build on its rich legacy while also adapting to contemporary challenges in the arts sector. With Harte at the helm, the orchestra aims to further its mission of delivering exceptional musical experiences to audiences worldwide.
As the LSO prepares for this transition, the music community eagerly anticipates the innovative directions that Harte will take the orchestra in. His leadership is expected to usher in a new era of creativity and collaboration, reinforcing the LSO’s position as a leading force in the global music landscape.
