Elon Musk Reflects on Government Efficiency Role: “Somewhat Successful”
Elon Musk recently expressed his mixed feelings about his role in the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, describing his efforts as “somewhat successful.” In a candid conversation with Katie Miller, a conservative influencer and former aide, Musk stated he would not pursue a similar project again. During the interview, Musk acknowledged the complexity of reforming a large federal agency swiftly. He reflected on the challenges he faced while leading the department, which was part of President Donald Trump’s administration. Although Musk defended the agency’s mission, he lamented the impact his involvement had on his other ventures, particularly Tesla. He noted, “Instead of doing DOGE, I would have… worked on my companies.” This comment underscores the extent of his commitment to maximizing efficiency within the government during that time.
Musk’s tenure at the agency was brief, as he departed in the spring of 2023 before it officially closed last month. While he credited the department with saving an estimated $200 billion annually by addressing what he termed “zombie payments,” he admitted that the actual savings fell short of his initial ambitious projections. At one point, Musk had suggested that the agency could achieve savings in the trillions.

Following his departure from the government, Tesla shareholders approved a lucrative pay package for him, potentially positioning him as the world’s first trillionaire.
