DJ Akademiks Claims Drake and Kendrick’s Feud Hinders Hip-Hop Growth

The ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has significantly shaped the hip-hop landscape, but DJ Akademiks argues that its effects may be detrimental to the genre’s progress. During a recent livestream, Akademiks discussed how the rivalry has stifled the emergence of new narratives and artists within hip-hop, suggesting that media’s focus on this conflict has overshadowed more meaningful developments in the industry.

Akademiks noted that the period surrounding the Drake and Kendrick rivalry coincided with a substantial increase in viewership and revenue for media outlets. “During the Drake vs Kendrick beef, numbers went crazy, biggest money period of my career,” he stated, as shared in a clip on X by CY Chels. He emphasized that the media’s continued emphasis on this feud has prevented the genre from evolving, saying, “Hip-hop runs on storytelling, not just sound. And when media keeps recycling one beef, it stops building new narratives, new stars, and new moments.”

This is not the first time Akademiks has addressed the long-term ramifications of the Drake-Kendrick feud. In an interview with VladTV in October 2023, he advised Drake against mentioning Kendrick in his upcoming album, ICEMAN. He posited that further conflicts with other rappers would be unproductive for Drake’s career. “When I mean leave him alone, we’ve got to leave the moment. There’s no more direct engaging,” he explained. He suggested that Drake should adopt a subtler approach, akin to that of Jay-Z, instead of engaging in diss tracks.

Akademiks further argued that continuing to feud with Kendrick or any other artist offers little to gain for Drake. “After this battle, it should be Drake’s last. Like, why engage with rappers? In any of these situations, you have nothing to gain,” he remarked. He pointed out that Drake has already solidified his status in the music industry, making further conflicts seem unnecessary.

As fans anticipate new music, Drake’s upcoming album currently lacks an official release date, although it is projected to arrive sometime in 2026.
