Disney Worker Rescues Audience, Injured by 400-Pound Boulder
A Disney World cast member was injured while heroically preventing a 400-pound prop boulder from rolling into an audience during a performance of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular on January 1, 2024. The incident occurred at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, highlighting the potential hazards associated with live performances, even in a controlled theme park environment.
During the stunt show, a massive artificial boulder, which replicates the iconic scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, came loose from its track and began to roll toward spectators. The cast member quickly intervened, stepping into the boulder’s path to stop it from reaching the audience. This brave action likely averted serious injuries to attendees.
Video footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, showcasing the moment the cast member engaged with the runaway prop. The boulder, although fake, weighs over 400 pounds and poses significant risks. The employee successfully halted its momentum but was subsequently knocked down, landing torso-first on the ground. Witnesses reported that he appeared injured and did not rise immediately as fellow cast members rushed to assist him.
Disney confirmed that the cast member suffered bleeding but was not seriously hurt and is recovering. The company announced that they would modify the boulder sequence while their safety team conducts a thorough review of the situation.
Strong safety protocols are crucial in theme parks, where the illusion of danger is a key component of the experience. The incident raises questions about the effectiveness of safety measures in place during live performances. According to Disney, they are committed to ensuring the safety of both their employees and guests following this event.
As Disney World continues to operate as one of the premier theme park destinations, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety standards. The park has a history of prioritizing guest experience while striving to maintain a safe environment for all.
