Christmas Day 2023 promises a blend of cinematic releases and streaming events, catering to diverse audiences around the globe. This year, moviegoers will see the debut of several highly anticipated films, including The Housemaid, featuring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, and Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. Additionally, a comedic reimagining of the 1997 thriller Anaconda will feature Jack Black, Paul Rudd, and Steve Zahn.

While the box office competition will be fierce, experts predict that the winner may be Avatar: Fire & Ash, which releases six days earlier. Audiences are not limited to theatres this Christmas, as streaming platforms will also offer a wealth of content.

Sports and Streaming Take Center Stage

Christmas Day will see a robust lineup of sports events, particularly in American football and basketball. Two NFL games will air on Netflix: the Dallas Cowboys facing the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. ET and the Detroit Lions against the Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video will feature a primetime game between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs at 8:15 p.m. ET.

Last Christmas, the NFL’s introduction to Netflix proved successful, with more than 30 million viewers tuning in globally. This year, the halftime show for the second game will feature Snoop Dogg alongside a lineup including HUNTR/X and Lainey Wilson. In addition to these games, the NBA will host five matchups, including the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers against the Houston Rockets.

Classic and New Content to Binge

Streaming platforms will also offer a variety of holiday classics alongside new releases. Popular films such as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story can be found on HBO Max, while Disney+ will feature Home Alone and The Santa Clause. For fans of animated classics, A Charlie Brown Christmas will be available on Apple TV.

Netflix continues to capitalize on its original content strategy, with the highly anticipated release of Stranger Things 5 Vol. 2 on Christmas Day. The first volume debuted on Thanksgiving Eve, and the final episodes will conclude with a feature-length finale on December 31, 2023. The show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, expressed excitement about the audience’s response, noting that the first volume had Netflix’s second-largest opening week ever, following only Squid Game 2.

As audiences prepare for their Christmas celebrations, the combination of sports, blockbuster films, and beloved classics promises to create a festive atmosphere. With something for everyone, this Christmas Day is set to be a significant occasion for both movie lovers and sports fans alike.
