Christa Miller Discusses Her Role in Apple TV’s “Shrinking”
The third season of the Apple TV comedy series “Shrinking” premiered on March 6, 2024, featuring Christa Miller in a pivotal role. Known for her notable performances in series like “The Drew Carey Show”, “Scrubs”, and “Cougar Town”, Miller plays a complex neighbor to Jason Segel, who portrays a neurotic psychiatrist navigating the challenges of unconventional therapy.
Miller’s character, Liz, is introduced as a supportive neighbor eager to assist Segel’s character as he copes with the sudden death of his wife and manages his troubled teenage daughter. Reflecting on her involvement in the show, Miller expressed confidence in its longevity. “When I read the pilot, I knew it was going to be picked up,” she stated during a recent Zoom interview.
The enthusiasm surrounding “Shrinking” was palpable right from the start. Miller recalled, “When we did the first table read, I was sitting next to Harrison Ford, and it killed! The Apple executives were right behind me, and I thought, ‘Don’t you guys have a notes session?’ They said, ‘No,’ no notes.” This lack of feedback indicated a strong belief in the show’s potential.
Miller has enjoyed significant success in her career, spanning over two decades in television. With nine seasons on “The Drew Carey Show”, another nine seasons on “Scrubs”, and six seasons with “Cougar Town”, her experience contributes to her confidence in “Shrinking” evolving into a long-standing series. “I see it as a show that would just evolve and keep going,” she added.
In portraying Liz, Miller faces the challenge of stepping into a character who is markedly different from her own personality. “It’s very complicated for me to get in and work on her intention,” Miller explained. “But it’s also really fun, like figuring out a puzzle.” She emphasizes that Liz is on a journey of self-discovery, learning to open up and trust others while navigating her own complexities.
Miller’s marriage to Bill Lawrence, the creator of “Scrubs” and co-creator of “Ted Lasso”, adds another layer to her connection with the show. This collaboration underscores her commitment to quality storytelling and character development.
As the new season begins, audiences can expect to see Liz engage more deeply with those around her, showcasing her bold personality. “She has no filter and is in everyone’s business, which would drive me crazy,” Miller remarked, highlighting the humorous aspects of her character.
The premiere of “Shrinking” Season 3 promises to deliver an exciting blend of comedy and emotional depth, continuing to explore the intricacies of its characters. As Miller noted, “We are having a blast,” suggesting that the cast’s enjoyment will likely resonate with viewers.
With a solid foundation established in its first two seasons, “Shrinking” is set to captivate audiences once again, thanks to its unique storytelling and engaging performances.
