Capcom Reveals Dual Protagonists in Upcoming Resident Evil Requiem
Capcom hosted a hands-on demonstration for its upcoming release, Resident Evil Requiem, scheduled for February 27, 2026. The event took place at the Josun Palace Seoul Gangnam, where producer Masato Kumazawa and developers Alex Ng and Carrie Lam introduced the game’s features and engaged with enthusiastic Korean fans.
The highlight of the presentation was the dual-protagonist structure that aims to balance action and horror. Kumazawa confirmed the return of character Leon, who is depicted as a seasoned veteran. In contrast, Grace will be the most timid protagonist in the series. The two characters will meet while investigating a series of mysterious deaths across the United States, which adds depth to their interactions as the story unfolds.
Kumazawa discussed the game’s technical features, emphasizing that players will have the ability to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. This flexibility, first seen in Resident Evil Village, enhances player experience by allowing them to choose their preferred viewpoint.
Creature Design and Gameplay Features
The event also shed light on the extensive creature design, which includes a variety of enemies, from standard zombies to more complex foes like chainsaw-wielding creatures. Kumazawa acknowledged the challenge of balancing creature detail with player immersion, stating that players will encounter these horrors directly during gameplay.
A significant aspect of Resident Evil Requiem is its setting in Raccoon City, revisited approximately 30 years after the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The team aimed to explore the evolution of the city, a subject that longtime fans are likely eager to see. The game will also feature multiple difficulty levels to cater to a wide range of players, from novices to seasoned horror gamers.
Kumazawa emphasized that even on the easiest setting, the game will assist players with shooting mechanics, ensuring accessibility without compromising the horror experience. Attention was also paid to sensory elements, such as Grace’s hurried breathing and lighting effects, which are crucial in creating a tense atmosphere.
Character Development and Player Experience
During the Q&A session, Kumazawa elaborated on Grace’s character design, noting that she embodies a sense of vulnerability. The developers crafted her movements and reactions to highlight her timidity, which is a stark contrast to Leon’s confident demeanor. He stated, “Players will feel catharsis in Grace’s charm, seeing how the most timid character in the series’ history grows and takes a step forward from fear.”
When asked about potential virtual reality options, Kumazawa clarified that there would not be a dedicated VR version for Requiem. Instead, players can still enjoy the flexibility of switching perspectives without losing the core gameplay experience.
The producer confirmed that the gameplay for Grace will reflect the survival horror theme, focusing on resource management rather than aggressive combat, unlike Leon’s action-oriented sequences. He assured fans that even those unfamiliar with previous titles would be able to enjoy Requiem without confusion. “We designed it so that even players who haven’t played the previous game can enjoy it 100%,” he said.
Kumazawa concluded the session by expressing his excitement for the game’s release and encouraged fans to stay engaged for upcoming announcements. He stated, “Since many people are looking forward to it, I will work quickly to ensure it can be released on schedule. Please look forward to it.”
With its compelling dual-protagonist narrative and emphasis on horror and action, Resident Evil Requiem is set to offer a fresh experience for both new players and series veterans alike.
