André Øvredal’s New Horror Film Passenger Set for May 2026 Release
Director André Øvredal, known for his work on the acclaimed film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, has announced the release date for his upcoming horror movie titled Passenger. The film is set to hit theaters in the United States on May 29, 2026, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Øvredal, a Norwegian filmmaker, gained recognition with his 2010 film Trollhunter. He followed this success with The Autopsy of Jane Doe in 2016 and directed Mortal in 2020, before returning to horror with The Last Voyage of the Demeter in 2023. His latest project, Passenger, is generating anticipation, although specific plot details remain undisclosed.
The cast of Passenger features rising stars including Jacob Scipio from Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Lou Llobell known for Foundation, and Academy Award-winning actress Melissa Leo, recognized for her roles in The Equalizer 3 and The Fighter.
On the same day, the action-comedy Stop! That! Train!, directed by Adam Shankman and starring RuPaul Charles, is also scheduled for release. This creates a competitive landscape at the box office, with Disney and Lucasfilm set to debut The Mandalorian and Grogu one week earlier, on May 22, 2026, and Amazon MGM Studios releasing the much-anticipated Masters of the Universe on June 5, 2026.
The production of Passenger is led by Gary Dauberman, known for his work on Annabelle Comes Home, under his Coin Operated banner. Walter Hamada will also be producing for 18Hx.
Additionally, discussions regarding a sequel to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark are ongoing, although no release date has been confirmed. Furthermore, in 2024, it was reported that Øvredal is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of the popular video game Bendy and the Ink Machine.
As anticipation builds for Passenger, Øvredal’s reputation for crafting engaging horror narratives positions this film as a notable addition to his portfolio.
