Alex Honnold, renowned for his daring feats in free solo climbing, is set to captivate audiences worldwide as he attempts to scale the iconic Taipei 101 on January 23, 2024. This thrilling event will be broadcast live on Netflix under the title Skyscraper Live. Honnold, who has become a prominent figure in the climbing community, is known for tackling some of the most challenging vertical terrains without any safety equipment, relying solely on his climbing shoes and chalk.

Free solo climbing, which Honnold specializes in, is characterized by the absence of ropes or harnesses, making each ascent not only physically demanding but also incredibly perilous. Ahead of his planned climb, Honnold expressed confidence about the challenge, stating in an interview with the Associated Press on January 22, 2024, “I don’t think it’ll be that extreme. I think it’s the perfect sweet spot where it’s hard enough to be engaging for me and obviously an interesting climb.”

Early Life and Climbing Journey

Born in 1985, Honnold began climbing at the tender age of five, often accompanied by his father in various climbing gyms across California. He has shared that their time spent together in these environments was extensive, stating they spent “like, a million hours” honing his skills. This early exposure laid the groundwork for Honnold’s ascent into competitive climbing, where he participated in national and international youth championships by his teenage years.

Honnold gained international recognition as the subject of the 2018 documentary Free Solo, which chronicled his groundbreaking ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. This remarkable feat, completed in June 2017, made Honnold the first person to ever free solo this iconic rock formation. The documentary received widespread acclaim, winning seven Primetime Emmy Awards in 2019 and further solidifying Honnold’s status in the climbing world.

Personal Life and Recent Developments

In his personal life, Honnold is married to fellow climber Sanni McCandless. The couple first met in November 2015 and became a significant part of each other’s lives, with McCandless featured prominently in the Free Solo documentary. They announced their engagement in 2019 and were married in September 2020. The couple welcomed their first daughter, June, in 2022, followed by another daughter, Alice, in 2024.

While becoming a father has brought new responsibilities, Honnold remains undeterred in his climbing pursuits. He addressed concerns about the risks associated with climbing, stating, “I mean, implicit in the question is that I have more to live for… I’m still doing my very best to not die.” He noted that his family does not push him to take on more dangerous climbs, indicating that he approaches each challenge with thoughtful consideration.

Honnold’s lifestyle has also been unique; he spent a decade living in a van, which allowed him the freedom to travel to optimal climbing locations. He explained in a 2020 GQ interview that while living in a car may not be ideal, it enabled him to follow good weather conditions while remaining relatively comfortable. He humorously remarked on the convenience of having everything within arm’s reach in his van compared to staying in larger hotel rooms.

As Honnold prepares for his ascent of Taipei 101, anticipation builds for what promises to be a remarkable display of athleticism and mental strength. With its height of 101 stories, Taipei 101 ranks as the 11th tallest building in the world, making this climb a significant undertaking for the climber. As the broadcast date approaches, fans and viewers alike are eager to witness Honnold’s latest adventure in the world of extreme climbing.
