USDA Recalls 16 Frozen Rice Products Over Glass Contamination
Frozen fried rice and other Asian-themed products sold at Trader Joe’s and various retailers are under recall due to potential contamination with foreign objects, specifically glass. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the recall affects a total of 16 products distributed by Ajinomoto Foods, based in Oregon. This action expands the company’s earlier recall initiated on February 19, 2024, which included ready-to-eat chicken and pork fried rice, ramen, and shu mai dumplings.
According to the USDA, nearly 37 million pounds of affected products are being recalled. The specific items were produced between October 21, 2024, and February 26, 2026, and carry best-buy dates ranging from February 28, 2026, to August 19, 2027. The USDA emphasized that this recall is being conducted “in an abundance of caution” following multiple consumer complaints about glass found in the products.
The contamination was traced back to carrots used in the packaging. The USDA’s investigation revealed that these carrots were likely the source of the glass contamination. Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly advised not to consume them. Instead, they should either dispose of the items or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Details of the Recalled Products
The recall encompasses products sold under various brand names, including Kroger, Ling Ling, and Tai Pei. Affected items from Trader Joe’s are also included in this recall, with specific product details available on the USDA’s website.
In addition to Trader Joe’s, Costco announced on March 3, 2026, that their Shoyu Ramen Bowls are also being recalled due to similar glass contamination concerns. The affected Costco products have best-buy dates between May 2, 2026, and July 5, 2027.
As the recall unfolds, the USDA continues to urge consumers to remain vigilant and check their freezers for these products. Those who find any of the recalled items are encouraged to return them to the store for a refund, ensuring safety for all consumers.
For residents in Delaware looking for Trader Joe’s locations, while Kroger does not have stores in the state, there are two Harris Teeter grocery stores, which are owned by Kroger, where similar products may also be available.
