Trump Administration Rescinds $57M Grant for Lithium Project

A federal grant of $57 million for a lithium hydroxide manufacturing plant near Tonopah, Nevada, has been rescinded by the Trump administration. The decision affects the Tonopah Flats Lithium Project, which is approximately five miles west of the town. According to a statement from American Battery Technology Co. CEO Ryan Melsert, the company plans to continue working with government officials to see the project through, despite this setback.

If federal permits are granted, the project could enhance Nevada’s position as a leader in lithium production. Currently, the only operational lithium mine in the United States is Albemarle’s Silver Peak mine located in Esmeralda County. Melsert expressed confidence in the project, stating, “All evidence demonstrates that this critical minerals project aligns with the Administration’s mission and key priorities.” He referenced the administration’s earlier designation of the project as a Priority Project, which was aimed at expediting federal permitting processes.

The U.S. Department of Energy did not respond to inquiries regarding the grant’s cancellation. The Trump administration has previously shown support for lithium production, considering it essential for establishing a domestic supply of critical minerals. Following the announcement, American Battery Technology Co. immediately filed an appeal against the termination of the grant. The company reported that approximately $52 million of the grant was still available at the time of its rescission, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Melsert remarked, “We’re energized by the potential of this project to strengthen the U.S. critical minerals supply chain.”
