Mamdani Aims for $4 Million in Transition Fundraising Ahead of Inauguration
Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $4 million for his transition period, which exceeds the amounts raised by the last two administrations combined. This funding is crucial for vetting over 50,000 resumes, hiring transition staff, and planning his inauguration and policy initiatives. In a recent appeal, Mamdani stated, “I hope very soon not to have to ask you for money, but until then: I’m asking.”
The socialist candidate, who aims to have everything in place by his inauguration on January 1, 2024, has already raised over $1 million from 12,707 donors, with an average contribution of $77.65. He contrasted his fundraising efforts with those of the current administration, led by Mayor Eric Adams, claiming that their total amount raised was “much lower” than previous transitions. The Adams administration garnered approximately $2 million, while former Mayor Bill de Blasio raised a similar amount during his tenure.
Mamdani’s transition fundraising is intended not only for staffing and inauguration expenses but also to kickstart his policy agenda. He plans to focus on initiatives such as affordable public transport and free childcare. According to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, funds raised for transitions must cover expenses directly related to the transition and inauguration. Typical costs include staffing, office equipment, and event expenses such as catering and entertainment.
His campaign can continue to raise funds until January 31, 2026, after which they can no longer incur expenses related to the transition, apart from a few specific exceptions.
Transition Team and Policy Focus
Mamdani has appointed a team of progressives to guide his transition. Notably, he has named former Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan as co-chair. Khan is exploring ways to enforce Mamdani’s affordability agenda, which aims to lower costs for residents in various sectors, including healthcare. She is also investigating pricing practices among local hospitals.
Additionally, Mamdani has appointed Elle Bisgaard-Church as his chief of staff. Bisgaard-Church has been instrumental in shaping Mamdani’s affordability initiatives and is expected to influence personnel decisions across the administration. Another key appointment is Dean Fuleihan, who served as First Deputy Mayor under de Blasio. Fuleihan brings extensive government experience and will advise Mamdani on budgetary and policy decisions.
Mamdani’s inauguration promises to be a significant event, especially following the scaled-back ceremonies of recent administrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Adams had to cancel his planned inauguration event at King’s Theatre in Brooklyn, both he and de Blasio were sworn in shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day. Mamdani seems poised to reinstate a more celebratory inauguration, which could reflect the progressive values he champions.
As he prepares for his transition, Mamdani continues to appeal to the public for support, emphasizing the urgency of funding to ensure a smooth start to his administration.
