Khalil Shakir Embraces Financial Prudence After $60.2 Million Deal
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir has become a notable figure not only for his performance on the field but also for his approach to personal finance. After signing a lucrative $60.2 million contract extension, Shakir continues to prioritize financial responsibility, a habit he attributes to lessons learned in his childhood.
The 25-year-old player candidly refers to himself as a “weirdo” for his frugal habits, including checking the price of a can of soda before making a purchase. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Shakir explained, “I think it was just something that my parents instilled in me at a young age. You think about how you want your life to look, you know, 10, 20 years from now.”
Shakir’s recent contract extension has certainly enhanced his financial standing, yet he maintains a measured approach to spending. He made a significant personal investment by purchasing a home in Buffalo, marking a transition from apartment living to a house with space for his dogs. The timing coincided with the arrival of his first child, daughter Sunny, born in November 2023.
Reflecting on his financial philosophy, Shakir stated, “No matter what the price is, for me, spending money on something, it can be a soda or it can be a house. No matter what that price is, I just am against seeing the number go down in my account.” This mindset allows him to view his new home not merely as an expense but as a long-term investment.
As he enters his fourth season in the NFL, Shakir is focused on both his career and his family. He acknowledges that thoughts of Sunny occupy “90 percent of the time” he spends at work. Scrolling through his camera roll filled with images of his newborn daughter serves as a reminder of his priorities beyond football.
Additionally, Shakir expressed gratitude for the Buffalo Bills’ fanbase, known as Bills Mafia, for their unwavering support. He described the fans as “truly, truly care[ing] about every single individual on this team,” emphasizing the strong community connection he feels as a player.
His teammates often tease him about his choice of vehicle—a 2021 Subaru—highlighting his commitment to making financially sound decisions. Partnering with Kelley Blue Book, Shakir aims to promote the importance of informed financial choices. “They pretty much create a whole playbook for you to make sure that you make an informed decision before you buy something,” he noted.
Shakir’s philosophy on finance aligns closely with his personal values. He remarked, “Making smart, financial, informed decisions is something that I truly, truly care about, and I think there’s nothing better than having a partnership that values everything that they do with my core values in my own individual lifestyle.”
As the Bills continue to vie for playoff contention, Shakir’s commitment to both his financial well-being and his family remains a fundamental aspect of his life on and off the field.
