Gas Prices Surge in Southern California, Some Exceed $8 Per Gallon
Gas prices have risen sharply across Southern California, with the statewide average surpassing $5 per gallon. Some drivers have reported prices exceeding $8 at the pump, a significant increase attributed to recent geopolitical tensions. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average for gasoline has surged nearly $0.50 in the week following the onset of conflict in Iran, compounding a pre-existing upward trend typical of this time of year.
In California, the average price per gallon has reached $5.17 in Los Angeles County, marking a 17-cent increase overnight alone. Nearby, prices are recorded at $5.15 in Orange County and $5.06 in Riverside County. Local residents have expressed concern over the rising costs, particularly those relying on vehicles for work.
“I drive Uber and I’m just getting killed right now,” said Michale Terry, a local driver. “Gas prices are just so high… they were high before the war.” Many drivers are feeling the impact of these increasing prices, which are straining their budgets.
Despite the high costs, some stations offer more competitive rates. At the American Oil station in Exposition Park, fuel is priced just above $4 a gallon. “I’m always searching for cheaper gas, so right now that’s how Los Angeles is working,” noted driver Deejay Brown. In stark contrast, a Chevron station in downtown Los Angeles shocked customers with a price of $8.21 a gallon. “It’s insane, insane work… it’s too high. I definitely won’t be coming here for that,” shared driver Denise Rodriguez.
Visiting from New York, Matt Jozwiak expressed disbelief at the prices. “I just actually could not believe my eyes when I saw that $8; that is wild,” he remarked.
Experts attribute the price increase not only to international factors but also to California’s specific regulatory policies and reduced in-state gasoline production. These elements combine to create a volatile market that is difficult for consumers to navigate.
