A fire occurred on the night of March 14, 2024, at the LyondellBasell chemical plant located at 10801 Choate Road in Pasadena, Texas. Local emergency crews, along with officials from Harris County Pollution Control, responded swiftly to the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the time, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Emergency response teams were dispatched shortly after the fire ignited at approximately 9 p.m. Fire departments from La Porte and Pasadena joined the effort to manage the situation. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office stated that its hazmat team was on site, and shortly after 11 p.m. confirmed that there was “no action needed from the community at this time.”

Community Monitoring and Safety Measures

In a message posted around 11:20 p.m. on social media, the La Porte Office of Emergency Management indicated that air monitoring was underway in the vicinity of the facility. The monitoring revealed “no actionable readings” from the air quality tests, alleviating immediate concerns about potential health risks to nearby residents.

An alert distributed through the East Harris County Manufacturers Association described the fire as an “operational upset” at the LyondellBasell plant. This facility is known for producing chemicals utilized in various products, including paint, automotive parts, gasoline components, and antifreeze. As part of the emergency response, the community was informed that they might experience the sound of emergency sirens, rumbling noises, and see bright flames or smoke as crews worked to control the fire.

By midnight, a follow-up alert confirmed that all personnel at the plant were “safe and accounted for.” The message emphasized that the “safety of our employees and our neighbors remains a priority as response efforts continue.”

This incident underscores the importance of swift emergency response and the ongoing commitment to safety by both the LyondellBasell plant and local authorities. As investigations continue, updates will be provided to ensure that the community remains informed.
