Elsevier and Jisc Launch Three-Year Open Access Agreement for UK
Elsevier, a leading provider of scientific and healthcare information, has announced a three-year combined read and publish agreement with Jisc, the representative body for UK academic research institutions. This agreement, revealed on February 23, 2026, aims to enhance access to research by allowing participating UK institutions to continue accessing Elsevier journals while also enabling eligible authors to publish their research openly.
The new agreement combines access to Elsevier’s extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed journals with open access publishing options. It is designed to alleviate the administrative burdens faced by researchers and institutions, presenting a streamlined workflow for publishing. Key benefits for the participating institutions include:
– Continued access to Elsevier’s comprehensive range of journals
– Open access publishing options for eligible UK-affiliated corresponding authors
– Simplified publishing processes
– A collaborative approach that aligns with the needs of UK institutions
William Rubens, Regional Vice President of Research Sales at Elsevier, emphasized the importance of this agreement for the UK’s research community. He stated, “We are pleased to continue working with Jisc in support of the UK’s world-class research community. At a time when institutions are managing a range of pressures, this agreement recognises the importance of providing researchers with clear routes to immediate open access, alongside continued access to high-quality, trusted research published in Elsevier journals.”
Supporting Open Research Initiatives
This agreement is part of Elsevier’s ongoing commitment to support open research and responsible publishing. The company aims to work closely with universities, funding bodies, and sector organizations to develop publishing arrangements that fulfill the evolving needs of the research community.
Elsevier’s partnership with Jisc is pivotal in fostering a sustainable publishing ecosystem that prioritizes access to trusted scholarly content. By providing both reading and publishing solutions, the agreement intends to enhance the overall research infrastructure in the UK, further solidifying its position as a leader in global academic research.
As the landscape of academic publishing continues to evolve, collaborations like this between Elsevier and Jisc reflect a proactive approach to meeting the demands of researchers and institutions alike. The focus on open access not only benefits authors but also ensures that valuable research remains accessible to the wider community, promoting knowledge sharing and innovation across disciplines.
