Community Mourns the Loss of Educator Susan H. Patterson
Susan H. Patterson, a beloved educator and community member, passed away peacefully at her home in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, on February 26, 2026, at the age of 78. Surrounded by her loving family, her departure leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew her.
A Life Dedicated to Education and Family
Susan was born on October 16, 1947, in Ware, Massachusetts. She grew up in West Brookfield with her parents, Annie Momna Howard and Stedman Brown Howard, alongside her two brothers, Stedman (“Tig”) and Jonathan (“Jon”). The Howard family has a rich history in Saco, Maine, where they owned and operated the Bay View Lodge. Summers spent there were filled with work and joyous moments by the beach, where Susan notably won the title of “Best Tan” in Ogunquit during her teenage years.
After graduating from Tantasqua Regional High School in 1965, Susan pursued a degree in education at Leslie University, graduating in 1969. It was there that she met her future husband, Paul Grover Patterson. Their love story, sparked by a wink exchanged at the Hayes Bickford Cafeteria, led to their marriage in 1970, marking the beginning of a shared journey that lasted 55 years.
Passion for Teaching and Lifelong Learning
Teaching was not just a profession for Susan; it was her passion, deeply rooted in her family legacy. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she began her career as a classroom teacher in South Deerfield and Greenfield, where her warmth and enthusiasm inspired countless students. In 1986, Susan furthered her education by obtaining a master’s degree in education with a focus on reading from the University of Massachusetts. She became a reading specialist at the Greenfield Public Schools, where she took great joy in nurturing students’ love for reading.
Outside the classroom, Susan cherished life at the beach, savoring the sun and enjoying a glass of wine at 17:00. Her fondness for the southern coast of Maine was a family affair, as she instilled her love for the ocean in her children. Renowned for her vibrant personality, Susan had an infectious laugh that resonated with friends and family, often bringing joy to gatherings and meetings alike.
Family was at the core of Susan’s life. Her husband, Paul, along with their daughters, Melissa Patterson-Serrill and her husband, Doug, and Amanda Kendall and her husband, Ben, were her greatest treasures. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Max and Abe, and her brother, Jonathan Howard. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Tig.
A celebration of Susan’s life is planned for the spring. Family members encourage those wishing to attend to reach out for updates as the details are finalized. Further information will also be available on the McCarthy Funeral Home website, where attendees can sign the guest book and honor her memory through flowers or donations.
The legacy of Susan H. Patterson will continue to inspire those she touched throughout her life, reminding us all of the profound impact one individual can have on their community.
