Armed Suspect Shot by Border Patrol Sparks Riots in Minneapolis
An armed individual was shot and killed by US Border Patrol officers during a confrontation in Minneapolis on October 7, 2023. The shooting occurred while federal agents were conducting an operation targeting an illegal immigrant wanted for violent assault. The incident has since incited riots in the area, leading to escalating tensions between law enforcement and protesters.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), at approximately 09:05 AM CT, officers encountered a man armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and two loaded magazines. The suspect approached the Border Patrol officers, prompting a confrontation. “The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but he violently resisted,” the DHS stated in a post. The agency added that fearing for their lives, an officer discharged their weapon. Despite immediate medical assistance, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The aftermath of the shooting saw about 200 protesters gathering, reportedly obstructing law enforcement and escalating the situation into a riot. “Crowd control measures were deployed for the safety of the public and law enforcement,” the DHS noted. Reports indicate that the Minnesota State Patrol deemed the gathering an unlawful assembly and ordered the protesters to disperse.
This incident marks the second shooting involving federal efforts to detain illegal immigrants in Minneapolis. Governor Tim Walz condemned the operation, stating, “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
The man shot during the confrontation was identified as a 51-year-old male, though his name has not been released. This event follows closely on the heels of a related incident involving anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests, which resulted in the death of activist Renee Good, who was struck by a vehicle after allegedly driving towards an ICE agent.
As the situation unfolds, federal officials continue to face scrutiny regarding their operations in urban areas. The DHS has committed to providing further details about the incident and the ongoing implications for law enforcement in the region.
