Center Stage Shines with Emotional Rendition of “Hadestown”
The Center Stage Performing Arts in Beach, North Dakota, brought the acclaimed musical “Hadestown” to life from November 20 to 22, 2023. This production, directed by Tiffany Stonehocker, showcased a retelling of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, captivating audiences with its poignant narrative and powerful performances.
“Hadestown,” written by Anaïs Mitchell, first debuted on Broadway in April 2019 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Stonehocker, who experienced the show on Broadway, expressed her desire to share it with the community, stating, “The music, the story, the feelings and the magic of it all were calling for me to recreate on our stage.”
The production opened with a lively jazz number that set the tone for the evening. Hermes, portrayed by Sawyer Noll, serves as the narrator, guiding the audience through the tale with charisma and energy. He introduces key characters, including Persephone (played by Oakley Stonehocker), the goddess of spring, and Hades (played by Josh Davidson), the stern ruler of the underworld. The story quickly unfolds, presenting Orpheus, a gifted musician portrayed by Oliver Lovell, and his love, Eurydice (played by Kailee Tescher).
The narrative explores the themes of love and sacrifice as Orpheus and Eurydice navigate their relationship amid the challenges posed by Hades. Noll’s portrayal of Hermes is dynamic, particularly evident in his opening number where he sings, “It’s a sad song, but we sing it anyway.” This line foreshadows the emotional journey ahead, as the audience is drawn into the couple’s struggles.
As the story progresses, Eurydice is depicted as a character torn between her love for Orpheus and her desire for security. Tescher’s performance was notable for its depth, embodying a woman who, while yearning for connection, is also wary of vulnerability. Her decision to take a ticket to the underworld represents a pivotal moment in the narrative, illustrating the conflict between love and survival.
Act II focuses on Orpheus’s quest to rescue Eurydice, showcasing Lovell’s portrayal of a hopeful and determined musician. His commitment to creating a song powerful enough to change their fate highlights the contrasting perspectives between him and Eurydice. While he believes in the transformative power of his music, she grapples with the harsh reality of their situation.
The emotional weight of “Hadestown” culminates in an impactful conclusion that fulfills Hermes’s ominous prologue. Stonehocker’s direction and the cast’s performances created a compelling production that resonated with the audience, transforming the stage into a vivid depiction of love and loss.
In summary, Center Stage Performing Arts’ presentation of “Hadestown” offered a heartfelt exploration of an age-old tale. With its strong performances and evocative music, the production honored the spirit of the original while making it accessible to the local community. The show exemplified the power of storytelling, reminding everyone that even the saddest songs can be beautifully sung.
