“Wicked: For Good Fails to Captivate Audiences in Sequel”
The highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good, has left audiences divided, failing to capture the magic that made its predecessor a beloved classic. Released in October 2025, the film continues the story of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, who fully embraces her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Despite the star-studded cast, including Ariana Grande as Galinda and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, critics have expressed disappointment in the film’s execution and storytelling.
Picking up shortly after the events of the first installment, Wicked: For Good attempts to portray a world where propaganda fuels hatred towards Elphaba, with the Wizard and Madame Morrible manipulating the citizens of Oz. The film’s premise holds promise; however, it struggles to develop its characters and story arcs adequately, resulting in a narrative that lacks depth.
Character Development and Storytelling Challenges
One of the film’s significant shortcomings lies in its character development, which was primarily established in the first film. This challenge leaves many of the dramatic moments in For Good feeling flat and underwhelming. While the love triangle involving Elphaba, Galinda, and Prince Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, is intended to be a focal point, it fails to resonate as effectively as anticipated.
Critics have noted that while songs like “No Place Like Home” and “For Good” may appeal to audiences, they do not reach the emotional heights of iconic numbers from the first film, such as “Defying Gravity.” The film risks feeling like a mere extension of the original rather than an independent narrative, diminishing the impact of its musical elements.
Thematic Ambiguities and Cultural Commentary
“The film’s intention remains unclear: does it aim to revere the 1939 original or demystify it?”
The thematic direction of Wicked: For Good also presents challenges. Some critics argue that the film’s darker portrayal of the world of Oz undermines the timeless charm of The Wizard of Oz. Scenes depicting intelligent animals being oppressed and a violent Tin Man cast a harsh light on a classic that many hold dear.
While the intention to tackle serious themes such as fascism and resistance is commendable, the execution often feels superficial. The film’s attempt to blend these complex topics with a glossy musical format results in a disjointed experience that leaves viewers yearning for a more cohesive narrative.
Despite the film’s shortcomings, it is expected to perform well at the box office, potentially grossing over $500 million. Fans of the original may still find elements to appreciate, particularly Erivo’s commanding performance and the film’s visually stunning production design. However, many viewers may ultimately agree that the sequel lacks the depth and emotional resonance of its predecessor, leaving the audience with a sense of unfulfilled potential.
In summary, Wicked: For Good offers a visually captivating experience but falls short in delivering a compelling story. As the curtain draws on this chapter of the Wicked saga, audiences are left to ponder the future of this franchise and its ability to maintain the magic that originally captivated them.
