The San Diego State Aztecs secured a decisive 25-3 victory over the San Jose State Spartans on November 22, 2025, capping off a perfect home season at Snapdragon Stadium. With this win, the Aztecs improved their record to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West Conference, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the conference title with one game remaining.

The game began with a flourish for the Aztecs, as safety Dwayne McDougle intercepted Spartans quarterback Walker Eget on just the third play, returning the ball 25 yards to the San Jose 20-yard line. Capitalizing on this early momentum, San Diego State executed a series of run plays culminating in a one-yard touchdown rush by running back Lucky Sutton, who hails from San Diego.

In a unique strategic move, the Aztecs opted to go for a two-point conversion after their first touchdown. Senior special teams player DJ Herman successfully passed to fellow senior Brady Anderson, extending the lead to 8-0. Kicker Gabriel Plascencia then added a 35-yard field goal just before the end of the first quarter, increasing the score to 11-0.

San Jose State managed to score with a 37-yard field goal from kicker Mathias Brown in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 11-3. However, the Aztecs responded in the closing moments of the first half, with quarterback Jayden Denegal rushing for a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal situation, bringing the halftime score to 18-3 after Plascencia’s successful extra point.

During the post-game press conference, Denegal expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “It’s amazing. But we’ve just got to keep getting better day-by-day.” In the first half alone, Denegal completed seven of 11 passes for 79 yards and added eight rushing yards.

Sutton contributed significantly with 47 rushing yards, while wide receiver Donovan Brown recorded 63 receiving yards on two receptions. The Aztecs capped off their scoring with a final touchdown in the game’s waning moments, as Chris Washington rushed from the eight-yard line to secure the 25-3 victory.

“This night meant a lot; I’ve been here all four years,” Washington reflected on Senior Night, which honored several players in their final season with the team. The Aztecs concluded their home schedule with a flawless 6-0 record at Snapdragon Stadium. Washington added, “It feels great to show people that when we play at home, we mean business.”

This matchup marked the last time San Diego State and San Jose State will face each other as members of the Mountain West Conference. Effective July 1, 2026, San Diego State, along with other schools such as Boise State and Fresno State, will transition to the Pac-12 Conference, while San Jose State remains in the Mountain West.

Head coach Sean Lewis commended his team, stating, “A lot of hard work has led up to this moment. The reward for the work that we’ve done is more work. The work is the reward.”

Looking ahead, the Aztecs will conclude their regular season on the road against New Mexico on Friday, December 1, at 12:30 p.m. local time, which will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. New Mexico is currently riding a five-game winning streak and holds an overall record of 8-3, including 5-2 in conference play. A victory for San Diego State in this matchup could secure their place in the Mountain West Championship game scheduled for December 5.
