Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence Unite for Maritime Air Defense
Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence have officially partnered to enhance maritime air defense capabilities for surface vessels. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 12, 2024, at the Berlin Security Conference, aims to create synergies between Diehl’s guided missile systems and Lockheed’s integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) solutions.
Strategic Collaboration for Enhanced Defense
The collaboration seeks to integrate Diehl’s IRIS-T missile systems with Lockheed’s advanced technologies, such as the Aegis Weapon System and MK41 Vertical Launch System (VLS). A spokesperson from Diehl described the MoU as a “starting point,” with both companies currently defining their next steps. Initial discussions indicate the partners are considering two separate projects to launch their cooperation, although specific details remain undisclosed.
According to Diehl’s spokesperson, this partnership is poised to tap into a significant market, attracting navies globally. Lockheed’s Chief Executive and Vice President for Europe, Dennis Goge, highlighted the mutual benefits, stating, “I would argue for Diehl to get into the Aegis Weapon System… that’s a big deal for them. On the other hand, it’s good for us, because we diversify the portfolio there.”
Potential Clients and Future Prospects
When questioned about potential launch customers for the collaboration, Goge suggested that the German military might express interest. The German Navy currently employs the IRIS-T in maritime operations, incorporating the IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missiles on its F125 frigate, the Baden-Württemberg. Goge noted, “They’re using [IRIS-T] in the IAMD environment… It just makes sense, also from an interoperability point of view.”
The MoU was signed by Helmut Rauch, CEO of Diehl Defence, and Chandra Marshall, Vice President at Lockheed Martin. Rauch emphasized the significance of their collaboration, stating, “With Diehl Defence and Lockheed Martin linking up their expertise and capabilities, navies around the globe can benefit from the optimum for air defense systems on their surface vessels.”
Marshall also remarked on the importance of this strategic collaboration, noting that it showcases the scalability and increased capacity of their programs, which aim to deliver next-generation IAMD capabilities worldwide. The partnership underscores a growing trend in defense collaboration across borders, highlighting the necessity for advanced maritime defense solutions in a rapidly evolving global security landscape.
