Westminster Owls Secure Spot in State Quarterfinals with Dominant Win
The Westminster Owls have advanced to the Class 3A state quarterfinals after a commanding 45-21 victory over Atholton. The win, secured on March 15, 2024, highlights the team’s impressive performance this season, driven by a formidable offensive line and a talented roster.
Under the leadership of head coach Chris Bassler, the Owls have showcased their depth and skill throughout the season. Quarterback Rory O’Connor has been pivotal in leading the offense, displaying poise and precision. Alongside him, running backs Jack Hitchcock and Nick Compher have proven to be explosive threats, capable of breaking through defenses with ease.
Offensive Line: The Backbone of Success
Despite the array of offensive talent, the heart of the team lies in the offensive line, regarded for their physicality and teamwork. This unit, comprised of four seniors who previously contributed to last year’s county championship team, has been instrumental in the Owls’ journey. Tackles David Gerting and Aiden Wengert, guards Drake Geho and John Okiddi, and center Ryan Dunne form the starting group, supported by Christian Tripplet. Their cohesion has allowed them to execute complex plays effectively.
Coach Bassler emphasized the strength of the offensive line, stating, “These guys have put in the work in the weight room, in practice, and have continued to get better.” The commitment shown during summer training sessions has paid dividends, with several players breaking personal records in the gym.
The synergy between the offensive line and the rest of the team has fostered a strong sense of confidence. O’Connor expressed his trust in Gerting’s ability to protect him from pressure, noting, “I never have to worry about pressure from the other side, because I know he’ll hold it down.”
Season Progression and Key Performances
The Owls faced early challenges this season, including a narrow 12-10 loss to Franklin and the absence of Hitchcock due to a toe injury. Despite these setbacks, the team rallied, with Compher stepping up as the new leading running back. His performance has been exceptional, currently leading Carroll County with 1,117 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns over the course of the season.
Dunne remarked on the strong bonds within the team, stating, “It’s special playing with all these guys, we have a good relationship.” The familiarity and teamwork have been critical as the Owls have achieved nine consecutive victories.
Looking ahead, the Owls are set to face Guilford Park, another Howard County team, in the state quarterfinals at 18:30 on Friday. Coach Bassler recognizes that the performance of the offensive line will be crucial in determining the team’s success. He stated, “It’s no secret that our success has been built in the trenches and come at the line of scrimmage.”
As the Owls aim for a place in the state championship, the spotlight remains on the offensive line, which has driven the team’s success this season. With their collective effort and determination, Westminster is poised to continue its remarkable run.
