Chile’s Polarized Election Features Communist and Far-Right Candidates

Chile prepares for a pivotal presidential election on December 10, 2023, featuring a diverse array of candidates, including a longtime member of the Communist Party and two ultraconservative politicians. As the nation grapples with escalating crime rates and rising immigration, analysts predict that voters may lean towards a shift in political direction, although the extent of that change remains uncertain.

Candidate Overview

The ballot includes eight candidates, but three frontrunners have emerged: Jeannette Jara, representing the Communist Party; José Antonio Kast, an ultraconservative politician; and Johannes Kaiser, a libertarian with increasingly radical views. Jara, a former labor minister under the leftist government of Gabriel Boric, leads in polls but is navigating challenges due to her ties with the unpopular administration. She has indicated a desire to distance herself from her party, even suggesting she might suspend her membership if elected.

Jara’s campaign emphasizes development through domestic production, enhancing worker rights, and raising the minimum wage. She also acknowledges Chile’s security challenges, advocating for increased law enforcement, the construction of new jails, and improved border security measures.

Kast, frequently compared to Donald Trump, advocates for stringent border controls and has proposed deporting around 300,000 people who entered Chile illegally. His political stances include opposition to abortion rights and same-sex marriage, and he has previously suggested extreme measures to prevent irregular immigration, such as digging trenches along the northern border. Controversy surrounds Kast due to his father’s alleged connections to the Nazi Party, though Kast denies these claims, asserting that his father was compelled into military service.

Kaiser, who rose to prominence late in the campaign, presents even more hardline proposals than Kast. A former YouTuber, he has gained traction with his calls for a free market economy and heightened penalties for crime. Recently, he suggested sending immigrants with criminal records to El Salvador’s infamous Terrorism Confinement Center, a proposal that highlights his radical approach to immigration policy.

Key Issues at Stake

Security is the foremost concern for Chilean voters, as the National Institute of Statistics reports a steady increase in crime victims since 2021. Political analyst Luz Araceli González from Tecnológico de Monterrey emphasizes that the electorate is deeply troubled by organized crime and drug trafficking, with many feeling held hostage by these issues. Each candidate has promised tougher measures against crime; however, the effectiveness of their proposals in resonating with voters remains to be seen.

If no candidate secures more than half of the votes in the first round, a runoff election will take place on December 14, 2023. While Jara is currently favored to win the first round, a subsequent challenge could emerge against a more consolidated right-wing opposition. Political analyst Guillermo Holzmann notes that many voters are seeking practical solutions rather than aligning strictly with left or right ideologies, which may favor Kast and Kaiser’s platforms.

Holzmann further suggests that Kast’s chances may be bolstered by the unresolved issues facing Chile under Boric’s administration, particularly the heightened sense of insecurity and the ongoing struggle against organized crime. “Chile enters these elections with a degree of uncertainty,” he explains. The outcomes of this election could signal a significant ideological shift in the country’s governance, reflecting the electorate’s evolving priorities in a rapidly changing social landscape.
