DJ Lagway faced a challenging moment during his sophomore season with the Florida Gators, culminating in a disappointing performance against the Kentucky Wildcats. In a game held on March 15, 2024, Lagway completed only 11 of 19 passes for a mere 83 yards, along with one touchdown and three interceptions, contributing to a significant 38-7 defeat. The game marked a turning point for the quarterback, who was once viewed as one of the brightest young talents in college football.

In light of Lagway’s struggles, interim head coach Billy Gonzales made the decision to bench him at halftime. This move was not intended as punishment but rather as a strategic measure to protect Lagway’s confidence and development. Gonzales clarified his approach during a news conference, stating, “We were struggling. He was having a tough time, but it’s not all on him, and I told him that. As a coach, it’s our responsibility. If someone’s struggling, help them out or take them out so they’re not put in that position to have to keep fighting through it.”

Gonzales emphasized that the benching was a tactical decision, aimed at allowing Lagway to reset and refocus. He likened the situation to baseball, explaining, “I know we’re not Major League Baseball, but you’ve got an amazing amount of talent. You’re a great quarterback. But just like in baseball, if a pitcher’s struggling, what do you do? You get the next guy in. It doesn’t mean he’s not a great pitcher. It just means it wasn’t his day.”

In the second half of the game against Kentucky, the Gators turned to freshman Tramell Jones Jr., although Gonzales confirmed that Lagway remains in contention for the starting position moving forward. The interim coach indicated that Lagway would take first-team reps as the Gators prepare to face No. 6 Ole Miss in their next matchup. Gonzales expressed hope that the experience would serve as a learning opportunity for Lagway, saying, “I wanted to bring him out. Let him refocus, gather himself, and hopefully turn it into a learning experience that’s going to make him better this week as we prepare for Ole Miss.”

As the Gators look to rebound from their recent loss, Lagway’s ability to regain his form will be pivotal. The upcoming game against Ole Miss represents another opportunity for the young quarterback to demonstrate his potential and contribute to the team’s success. The Gators’ coaching staff remains committed to supporting Lagway’s development, emphasizing the importance of resilience and growth in the face of adversity.
