Hundreds Missing After Migrant Vessel Sinks Near Malaysia-Thailand Border
A tragic maritime incident occurred near the Malaysia-Thailand border, where a migrant vessel sank, leaving hundreds missing. The Malaysian maritime authority reported on Sunday that ten survivors and one body have been recovered from the sea. The vessel departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, carrying approximately 300 individuals when it sank three days prior.
First Admiral Romli Mustafa, the director of the Malaysian maritime authority for the northern states of Kedah and Perlis, provided updates on the situation. Among the survivors found in the waters off Langkawi were three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man. The body discovered belonged to a Rohingya woman, according to state media outlet Bernama, which cited comments from Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah.
The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority, have faced systemic discrimination and violence in Myanmar, where they are often perceived as foreign interlopers. Many attempt to flee the country to seek safety and better living conditions. In this instance, the group initially boarded a larger vessel. As they approached the border, authorities instructed them to transfer to three smaller boats, each carrying around 100 individuals, to avoid detection.
As of now, the status of the other two boats remains unknown. A dedicated search-and-rescue operation is currently underway, with hopes that more survivors can be located. The ongoing situation highlights the perilous journeys many migrants undertake in search of safety and stability.
The Malaysian authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to locate any additional victims or survivors in the surrounding waters.
