Lufthansa Cuts A340 US Flights by 50% This Winter Season
Lufthansa has announced a significant reduction in its Airbus A340 flights to the United States for the upcoming winter season, slashing operations by nearly 50%. This change reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry, where airlines increasingly favour twin-engine aircraft for their improved fuel efficiency and lower operating costs.
Over the past few decades, airlines have transitioned from three- and four-engine widebody aircraft to more economical twin-engine models. The Airbus A340, first launched in 1993, was initially lauded for its four-engine design, which provided redundancy and reliability. However, as the market has evolved, the viability of quadjets has diminished, leading to a decline in their use. Currently, only a few airlines, including Lufthansa, continue to operate the A340.
According to data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, Lufthansa is scheduled to operate just over 10,000 A340 flights this year. This includes approximately 7,300 flights using the A340-300 variant and nearly 2,900 flights with the larger A340-600. Notably, the airline had planned over 2,400 A340 flights to the US this year, but these numbers will drop considerably for the winter schedule.
Significant Changes in Flight Operations
For the winter season, Lufthansa will maintain a comparable overall number of flights to the US, but the aircraft deployed will see a marked shift. The carrier has reduced A340 flights to the US by over 500 one-way services, with much of this capacity being replaced by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The Dreamliner is becoming increasingly prominent in Lufthansa’s transatlantic operations.
Despite these reductions, the A340 will continue to serve select routes from its Frankfurt hub, including destinations such as Denver, Boston, and New York JFK. Specific changes include a transition on the Frankfurt–Atlanta route, where the A340-300 will be replaced with the 294-seat Dreamliner starting November 20. Additionally, the Frankfurt–Denver route will now feature the smaller A340-300, down from the larger A340-600 used last winter.
Lufthansa’s adjustments also affect several other US destinations, including Seattle, Detroit, and Dallas/Fort Worth, where A340-300 frequencies will see reductions. The Detroit service will operate a mix of A340 variants and Dreamliners throughout the season.
Future of the A340 Fleet
Lufthansa operates a total of 17 A340-300s and 14 A340-600s, with the A340-300 featuring 30 business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, and 221 economy seats. For the winter schedule, Lufthansa plans to operate around 387 one-way flights on US routes with the A340-300, a decrease from 564 flights during the same period last year.
The A340-600, which is configured with eight first-class suites and 56 business class seats, will see an even steeper reduction in operations, with only 173 flights planned this winter compared to 550 last year. These aircraft will serve just three US routes: New York JFK, Detroit, and Boston.
Lufthansa had intended to phase out its A340-600 fleet by late 2025, contingent upon the delivery of new Dreamliners. However, delays in the arrival of these aircraft have necessitated an extension of the A340-600’s service. The airline’s aging fleet, including the 747s, will continue to operate into the summer of 2026 as it navigates these logistical challenges.
In summary, Lufthansa’s decision to cut A340 flights to the US by nearly half this winter marks a notable shift in its operational strategy. As the airline adapts to changing market dynamics, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is set to play a crucial role in its transatlantic network.
