Dallas Cowboys Acquire Quinnen Williams in Major Trade Deal
The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move to bolster their defense by acquiring Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets. The trade, finalized just before the NFL’s trade deadline on November 4, 2025, involved the Cowboys sending a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith to New York.
This trade comes as the Cowboys seek to improve their performance following a disappointing start to the season with a record of 3-5-1. The team hopes that the addition of Williams will enhance their defensive capabilities. Coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed enthusiasm about the trade, describing it as both aggressive and smart, noting that it benefits the team not only for this season but also in the future.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys also acquired linebacker Logan Wilson from the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick, further indicating a commitment to strengthening their defensive lineup.
Williams, the third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has made a significant impact during his career with the Jets, being selected to the Pro Bowl in the 2021-2023 seasons. Over his career, he has recorded 40 sacks and has been credited with 32 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles, and three quarterback hurries so far this season. He leads all defensive linemen with a 9.5% run stop percentage this year, according to ESPN Research.
The Cowboys had previously explored trading for Williams before the season began, but discussions fell through when the Jets indicated they could not accommodate a trade involving linebacker Micah Parsons. Following those talks, Dallas acquired defensive tackle Kenny Clark from the Green Bay Packers along with two first-round picks for Parsons. Now, with Williams added to the roster, the Cowboys are keen to see how they will integrate him alongside Clark and Osa Odighizuwa into their defensive scheme.
The Jets, meanwhile, are undergoing a significant transition. Earlier in the day, they traded star cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for additional future draft picks, which underscores their shift towards rebuilding. Williams had expressed dissatisfaction with the Jets’ direction and the team’s struggles, which included a streak of seven consecutive losses to start the season. He had also voiced concerns about his role within the defense, as he recorded a sack in the opening game but struggled to maintain that level of production throughout the season.
Williams is under contract through 2027, with a salary of $20.75 million next year and $25.4 million in 2027. His contract situation had been a topic of concern for the Jets, who anticipated he would seek a renegotiation that would require additional guaranteed money. Instead of extending his contract, the Jets opted to trade him, marking a proactive approach to their roster changes.
The Cowboys are aiming to turn their season around and will return to action on November 17 against the Raiders after a bye week. Following their recent loss to the Arizona Cardinals, team owner Jerry Jones emphasized the importance of making strategic deals to reinforce the defense for both the current season and future campaigns. This trade for Williams represents the most significant move the Cowboys have made since they acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper in 2018, a transaction that revitalized their offense and contributed to a successful postseason run.
As the Cowboys prepare to integrate their new players, the effectiveness of these trades in improving their defensive performance will be closely scrutinized.
