‘The Witcher’ Season 5 Confirmed, But Future Remains Uncertain
Netflix has confirmed that the popular fantasy series, The Witcher, will return for a fifth season. The announcement follows the release of all eight episodes of Season 4, which debuted on December 20, 2019. This new season has introduced Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia, taking over from Henry Cavill. While the transition has sparked mixed reactions among fans, it also raises questions about the series’ future.
Critics have not been overwhelmingly positive about the latest season, with a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience reception is even less favorable, with an 18% score on the site’s “Popcornmeter.” Despite this lukewarm response, Netflix has launched a new prequel film titled The Rats: A Witcher Tale, suggesting that the franchise may still have potential.

Fans can expect Season 5 to feature Hemsworth, alongside returning cast members including Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Joey Batey as Jaskier the bard. New additions to the ensemble include Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart, James Purefoy as Stefan Skellen, and Laurence Fishburne as Regis, a character who joins Geralt’s adventures.
The intriguing aspect of this renewal is that the fourth and fifth seasons were filmed back-to-back. While this means the production process for Season 5 is currently in post-production, Netflix has not yet announced a release date. This uncertainty leaves fans awaiting further news on when they can return to The Continent.

The upcoming season will adapt the remaining novels from Andrzej Sapkowski‘s series, including Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake. In a recent interview, showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich expressed her commitment to the project, stating, “I won’t say goodbye to it quite yet, because I’m in post for a very long time for season five.” This sentiment underscores her dedication to ensuring the series concludes in a meaningful way.
While the confirmation of a fifth season is promising, it also brings the disappointing news that this will be the final installment of The Witcher series. Although not a cancellation, it curtails any hopes for extended storytelling within this universe unless future spin-offs are explored.
Currently, all episodes of The Witcher Season 4 and the new prequel film are available for streaming on Netflix. As audiences await further updates on the fifth season, the franchise’s direction remains a topic of considerable interest.
