Niagara County Prepares Early to Avoid Rock Salt Shortage Crisis
UPDATE: As winter approaches, Niagara County is taking urgent steps to prevent a rock salt shortage that plagued the region last year. Highway departments are stockpiling supplies ahead of the first major snowfall, ensuring communities are ready for any severe weather challenges.
In Wheatfield, N.Y., Highway Superintendent Paul Siegmann emphasizes the importance of early preparation. “We were fortunate that we had enough in stockpile that we didn’t run out last year, but we did get close,” he stated. With last year’s shortages leaving many towns scrambling, this proactive approach is crucial for maintaining safe road conditions.
The collaboration among towns has been vital. “If somebody was totally out of salt, we would share salt with them,” Siegmann added. This sharing strategy helped keep major roads and intersections clear during critical storms, showcasing a community effort to tackle adverse weather.
The situation was similarly challenging for the Niagara County Department of Highways and Parks. Superintendent Richard Sirianni revealed that American Rock Salt, the state’s primary supplier, struggled to meet demand last winter, leading to rationing. “If I needed 500 tons, they’d send me 200 tons and spread it around for everybody,” he explained, highlighting the strain on resources.
To combat potential shortages this year, Sirianni has already ordered hundreds of additional tons of rock salt. “It gives us a little bit of a safety net,” he said, underscoring the county’s commitment to being as prepared as possible.
Officials are still waiting for a response from Governor Kathy Hochul‘s office regarding any changes in supply or distribution plans if shortages reoccur. As of now, both Siegmann and Sirianni report no signs of an impending shortage, but they urge residents to remain cautious and patient. “Give plows space to work once winter weather arrives,” they advised.
With winter just around the corner, the proactive measures taken by Niagara County’s highway departments are a critical step in ensuring the safety of all drivers. As the first snowfall approaches, residents are reminded to stay informed and prepared for whatever challenges the season may bring.
