Federal Agents Detain Driver in Addison; Protests Erupt Immediately
UPDATE: Federal agents confronted by dozens of protesters in Addison, Illinois, after breaking a car window and detaining a driver and two passengers earlier today. Shocking video captured by a grocery store employee shows the incident outside the La Huerta grocery store, igniting immediate outrage in the community.
Protesters blocked a section of Lake Street following the incident, demanding answers from federal agents, who were reportedly part of Operation Midway Blitz. “They didn’t have a judicial warrant, no expedited removal order,” said protester Maria Sinkule, who was among those challenging the agents. “This really impacts my community. People are too scared to go to the store, my students are too scared to go to school.”
The situation escalated quickly, with at least four ICE vehicles on the scene. Witnesses reported that the driver was released after her immigration status was confirmed, but the incident left the community shaken and looking for answers.
Allison Galvan, a local activist, expressed her determination to mobilize community support. “I am using my privilege of being a U.S.-born citizen to fight for my people,” she stated passionately. “We need to be educated, we need to support each other, and that’s how we will get through this.”
Addison Mayor Tom Hundley issued a statement emphasizing his commitment to community respect and support, despite the federal nature of the incident. “Though our ability to intervene in federal matters is limited, I remain committed to ensuring that our Village continues to be a respectful and welcoming place for all,” he stated.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to inquiries about the specific incident in Addison. However, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on a separate operation in Chicago, highlighting a concerning increase in assaults against federal officers. “Our officers are facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line,” she said.
As protests continue, community members are gathering to share their frustrations and provide support for those affected by federal enforcement actions. The situation remains tense, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability.
Authorities are expected to maintain a visible presence as tensions rise, and community leaders are urging residents to stay informed and united. The immediate impact of today’s events has galvanized local activists, making it clear that the conversation around immigration enforcement in Addison is far from over.
