Utah Mammoth Triumphs 6-2 with Cooley’s Two Goals, Extends Streak
UPDATE: The Utah Mammoth secured their sixth consecutive victory with a commanding 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night in St. Paul, Minnesota. Star forward Logan Cooley shone brightly, netting two goals within the first 3:29 of the game, setting the pace for this decisive matchup.
Cooley, just two days after a stunning hat trick against St. Louis, struck first at just 56 seconds into the game. He skillfully backhanded the puck out of midair past Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson, giving Utah an early 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Cooley doubled his tally on a power play, taking advantage of a slashing penalty against Minnesota’s Yakov Trenin.
The Mammoth didn’t stop there. They surged to a 3-0 lead when Nick Schmaltz scored his sixth goal of the season just under five minutes into the first period, leaving the Wild in a challenging position.
However, veteran Marcus Johansson fought back for Minnesota, scoring twice to bring the Wild within striking distance. His first goal came with 4:21 left in the first period, a slick one-timer from Zeev Buium. Johansson later added a second on the power play late in the second, reducing the deficit to 3-2 with just eight seconds remaining in the man advantage.
Despite Johansson’s efforts, the Mammoth answered back. JJ Peterka extended Utah’s lead to 4-2 early in the third period, and Schmaltz netted his second goal of the night, pushing the score to 5-2. Remarkably, Schmaltz has now tallied seven goals in his past five games, showcasing his hot streak.
Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka was instrumental in this victory, making a total of 32 saves throughout the game. In the final moments, John Marino sealed the deal with an empty-netter, bringing the final score to 6-2 with just 5.1 seconds left on the clock.
The Mammoth will aim to extend their impressive winning streak to seven games as they face off against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. Fans are eagerly anticipating what this resilient team will achieve next.
