Rubio Commits to Recovering Hostage Remains as Tensions Persist

The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, pledged on Saturday to ensure the return of all deceased Israeli hostages, as efforts intensify to locate their remains in the Gaza Strip. Rubio’s remarks came during his visit to Jerusalem, where he met with families of the slain hostages, including dual U.S.-Israeli citizens Itay Chen, 19, and Omer Neutra, 21, whose bodies are believed to be buried within the conflict-ridden enclave.

“We will not rest until their — and all — remains are returned,” Rubio stated on social media platform X. He emphasized the importance of remembering the lives lost during the hostage crisis, particularly those who died in captivity under Hamas. Since a cease-fire agreement was reached on September 29, 2023, the remains of 15 out of 28 deceased hostages have been returned, alongside all 20 living captives.

Efforts to Recover Remains Intensify

Chen and Neutra, both soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), were killed during the initial attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, with their bodies subsequently taken hostage. In a collaborative effort, an Egyptian team has entered Gaza equipped with engineering vehicles to assist in locating the remains of the deceased. This mission was reportedly approved by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum echoed Rubio’s sentiments on Saturday, expressing the urgent need for the remaining hostages’ families to find closure. “Thirteen hostages need to come home,” the organization stated on X, urging continued efforts until the last hostage is released. A rally in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square attracted thousands, who called for the return of the remaining bodies.

Rubio’s visit to Israel concluded a three-day trip, after which he traveled to Doha to meet with former President Donald Trump and Qatar’s Emir and Prime Minister to discuss a potential international peacekeeping force in Gaza. Onboard the flight, Rubio mentioned that the U.S. is working on a United Nations resolution aimed at establishing this peacekeeping mission. “Many countries interested in participating will need this due to their domestic laws,” he noted.

Israeli Officials Hope for Further Releases

Israeli officials remain hopeful that Hamas will return two additional bodies on Sunday, as reports indicate pressure from mediators is mounting. Accusations have surfaced suggesting that Hamas is intentionally withholding the release of all deceased hostages despite being capable of doing so.

According to Israel’s public broadcaster, Israeli Defense Forces officials informed Vice President JD Vance on Thursday that they believe Hamas could return at least 10 of the remaining 13 deceased hostages. In parallel, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the primary objective now is to dismantle Hamas’ extensive tunnel network throughout Gaza, which he claims remains 60% operational.

Katz stated, “The demilitarization of Gaza by destroying Hamas’s terror tunnels, alongside disarming Hamas, is, in my view, the most important strategic objective for achieving victory in Gaza.” He has instructed the IDF to prioritize the destruction of these tunnels as part of their ongoing operations.
